UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH B. HAYS, OF CHESTER TOWNSHIP, POWESHIEK COUNTY, IOWA.
CLOTHES-STICK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH B. HAYs, a citizen of the United States, residing in the township of Chester, county of Poweshiek, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clothes-Sticks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to the means employed to engage the clothes or fabrics, rather than to the stick or staff proper, which may be anything that is suitable to the purpose.
The instrument is designed primarily for use in handling boiling clothes or fabrics where the temperature of the water is such as to preclude the use of the hands. Its usefulness is, however by no means limited to such purpose. It may be employed in manipulating and handling fabrics in the dye vat, etc.
It is obvious that in an instrument of this character, means must be provided to firmly engage the clothes or fabrics, in order that same may be lifted out of the boiler or vat in which they are being cleansed or treated. The means for this purpose must be of such a character that the fabrics will not be torn or otherwise damaged.
I attain the objects of my invention by the instrument illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
(Figure 1, illustrates my device attached to a stick or staff which is shown partly broken away. Fig. 2 is an end view and Fig. 3, a side view of same. In these drawings, I show how my device, which is preferably made of heavy galvanized wire, may be attached to the stick. A slot is sawed in the end of the stick, the wire inserted and rivets employed as shown.
In Figs. 4 and 5, I show how the device may be formed of wire in such a manner that it may be slipped over the end of the stick, the ends of the Wire, 5, being bent and forced into the Wood, thereby preventing same from turning upon the staff.
In Figs. 6, 7, and 8, I show how the device may be made by stamping same out of sheet Specification of Letters Patent.

steel or other metal. Fig. 8 shows the device as blanked out by the stamp, and Figs. 6 and 7, show it formed ready for the stick. A stout brad may be driven through the hole, 5, and into the wood of the stick to prevent the device from turning upon the stick.
The device comprises two curved wings or fingers, radiating at right angles from the staff or stick to which they are attached and being preferably opposite to each other. The arrangement is such that when the staff is revolved in one direction upon its longitudinal axis, the concave faces of the wings or fingers will engage the clothes or fabrics and hold same and when the staff is revolved in the opposite direction, the reverse will take place. IVhile I prefer the use of two engaging fingers, disposed opposite to each other as shown in the drawings, the number of such fingers employed is not arbitrary.
Having now fully described and illustrated my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is as follows:
1. A clothes stick comprising a suitable staff having a curved engaging finger upon one end thereof, said engaging finger being so disposed as to present its concave surface to the fabrics when the staff is revolved in one direction upon its longitudinal axis and in like manner to present its convex surface when the staff is revolved in the opposite direction.
2. A clothes stick, comprising a staff, a pair of elongated fingers attached to said staff at one end and extending therefrom at right angles and in opposite directions, the outer ends of said fingers being curved away from main portions of the fingers in opposite directions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and seal, this 14th. day of May, A. D. 1908.
JOSEPH B. HAYS.
