MURWIN WHEELER, LAKEVIEW, MICHIGAN.
CURT AIN-BRAOKET To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MURWIN WHEELER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lakeview, in the county of Montcalm and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Curtain- Brackets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in lace curtain holders or brackets for windows or other locations.
It has for its object to provide for readilyapplying the bracket for use and in accommodating it to the member or part to which it is to be applied, and is automatically retained in place without the use of the usual additional fastenings, and carries out the aforesaid ends in a simple, expeditious and effective manner.
The invention consists of certain features or instrumentalities substantially as hereinafter more fully disclosed and defined by the claims.
lVith these and other objects in View, the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of'parts, as will be more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention, Figure 1 shows the device as applied for use; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an edge elevation; Fig. 4 is a vertical section on the line 4;- L of Fig. 1.
In carrying out my invention, I construct the bracket or device of two members 1 and 2 the latter being slidable upon the former. The members 1 and 2 are provided with complementary jaws 3 and 4 respectively having their engaging edges preferably toothed or serrated for engagement with the lateral portion of the window casing .or other structure, in applying the bracket for use, or retention in place thereon. The memher 1, which is provided with an arm 5 over which is placed or held a curtain as when disposed in the usual manner, is provided with a longitudinal slot 6, while the member 2 has a preferably T-shaped terminal or end portion 7, the upper and lower edges of which terminal or end portion are adapted to embrace the top and bottom edges of the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. March 25, 1909.

Serial No. 485,723.
member 1. Said member 2 is also provided near its opposite end with upper and lower flanges 8 which also embrace or engage the corresponding edges of the member 1, and with the flanges of which T-shaped terminal portion of said former members together with the slot in the member 1 provide for the slidable adjustment or movement of the member 2 upon the member 1, as in accommodating the bracket for application to the part to which it is to be attached. This slidable connection may be efiected in certain other obvious ways as will readily suggest themselves to the mind of any ordinary mechanic. v
A spring 9, preferably of the coil type has its ends suitably connected to outstanding e rs or lugs 10 of the members 1 and 2 respectively, the stress or tension of said spring being effective to hold the member in its initial position, and accordingly to exert pressure upon the member 2 as it is extended or slid outwardly upon the member 1 in of fecting the application of the bracket for use. It is also apparent that the device may be gotten up in any ornamental shape or style which may suggest itself to the maker also that the device is exceedingly simple and readily applied for use' as well as being economic in manufacture.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A device of the character described embracing members connected together for expansion and contraction, one of said members having a longitudinal slot therein and an outstanding arm for engagement with the curtain and the like, the other member having a T-shaped terminal or end portion with the stem passing through the slot of the aforesaid member and the' head of the T Yprovided with flanges adapted to engage the lateral edges of the last named member.
2. A. device of the character described embracing two members, one having an outstanding arm and a longitudinal slot, and
the other member having a T-shaped terminal or end portion with the stem passing through said slot, and a head portion provided with flanges engaging the lateral edges of the aforesaid member, the opposite end of the member having the T-shaped terminal being provided with flanges also engaging the lateral edges of the first named member and said members having their distant ends provided with jaws, and resilient means efiecting connection between said members.
3. A device of the character described embracing two members, one having a longitudinal slot and the other having a T-shaped terminal with the stem passing through said slot and its head portion provided with flanges effective for engagement with the lateral edges of the aforesaid member, said members having their distant ends provided with jaws, outstanding lugs on said members, one of said members having an outstanding arm, and a resilient connection between the outstanding lugs formed upon said members respectively.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
