Description

E. B. JAMES.
PLOW.
- APPLIOATION FILED D110. 8, 1908.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD B. JAMES, OF OORDELE, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, ED1VARD B. JAMES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cordele, in the county of Crisp and State of Georgia, have invented a new and useful Flow, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to plows, and it consists of the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a plow with a standard of peculiar configuration and detachable parts, whereby the plow may be readily converted from a break plow into a middle breaker or lister, and vice versa.
A further object of the invention is to provide means whereby the plow beam may be pitched at a desired angle with relation to the standard, both horizontally and vertically.
With the above objects in view, the inven tion includes a standard, which is provided, at one side, with a permanently fixed pallet, upon which may be disposed a mold-board when the parts are arranged as a break plow, and which assists in supporting the upper plate of a share, when the plow is arranged as a middle breaker. At the opposite side of the lower portion of the said standard a shoulder is provided which extends throughout the length of the lower portion of the standard, and under which may be secured a land side plate when the parts are arranged as a break plow, which land side plate serves as a heel when the parts are arranged as a middle breaker, and a detachable pallet, corresponding, approximately, in so far as its bearing surface is concerned, with the pallet which is fixed to the standard, which pallet in turn has a shoulder portion adapted to lie under the shoulder at the lower portion of the standard. It will therefore be seen that when the detachable pallet is applied to the standard, the plate or point-supporting surfaces at the opposite side of the forward portion of the standard are approximately coequal, and thus a convenient and effective support is provided for the parts of a middle break plow or a listing sweep, and when the said detachable pallet is removed from the standard, ample surface provided for the support of a share and mold board, whereby the parts are arranged as a break plow.

1 is a perspective View of the standard and the parts arranged for the reception of members which constitute a middle-breaker: Fig. 2 is a perspective view at the under side of the parts as arranged in Fig. 1: Fig. 3 is a front elevation, showing the parts arranged for the reception of members effecting a breaking plow: Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the detachable pallet, adapted to be used in conjunction with the standard: Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the combined land side and heel detached: Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the standard and attached part-s: Fig. 7 is a rear end elevation of the upper portion of the standard and attached parts.
The standard 1, which forms a component part of the plow, consists of the shin portion 2, which is connected at its upper end with the sill portion 3, and the brace portion a, which is also connected at its upper end with the said sill portion 3 and which merges, at its lower end, into the rear por tion of the shin portion 2. The yoke 5 is mounted at the forward end of the sill portion 3, and is held thereon by means of a bolt (3 which, at times, serves as a pivot for the said yoke. The post 7 is mounted upon the rear end of the sill portion 3 and is provided with a vertically disposed elongated slot 8. The upper surface of the rear end of the sill portion 3 is provided with a series of furrows 9, which converge at their forward ends, which lines of converger meet at a point coincident with the center of the perforation through which the bolt 6 passes. The lower end of the post 7 terminates in a rearwardly disposed lug 10, which is provided with a rib 11 adapted to be seated in one of the furrows 9. The rear end portion of the sill 3 is provided with a transversely disposed elongated slot 12, and the bolt 13 passes vertically through the lug or flange and also through the said slot 12. The plow beam 1 1 passes through the yoke 5 under a bolt 15 which is secured at its end portions in the upper extremities of the said yoke, and the clip 16 is mounted upon the rear end of the said beam 14. The clip 16 is provided with a rearwardly disposed bolt 17, which passes through the elongated slot 8 of the post 7, and the front face of the said post is provided with a series of horizontally disposed furrows 18, any one of which is adapted to receive a rib 19 mounted upon the rear side of the said clip 16. By such an arrangement it is obvious that the beam 14 may be pitched at any desired angle, both horizontally and vertically, with relation to the shin portion 2 of the standard 1. A horizontal adjustment of the said beam is ac complished by removing the bolt 13 and swinging the beam 14 upon the bolt 6 as a pivot, so that the post- 7 may be positioned at any desired point upon the rear portion of the sill 3, and when in such position the bolt 13 is replaced. To accomplish vertical adjustment of the beam 1 1 the bolt 17 is loosened, whereby the said beam 14 is rendered free to be swung vertically, and when in proper position the said bolt 17 is tightened in the vertically disposed elongated slot 8- of the post 7. The furrows and ribs above described afiord positive means for holding the several parts in their adjusted positions against strains and jars which are usually met with in a plow of this character.
The parts 2, 3 and 1 of the standard are integral, and at the lower forward portion of the shin portion 2 and at one side thereof is located a pallet portion 20, which is integral with the said shin portion 2.
That part or side of the standard 1 opposite to that upon which is disposed the pallet portion 20 is provided with a shoulder 21, which extends throughout the length of the lower portion of the standard. The plate 22 is bolted to that side of the lower portion of the standard 1 upon which the shoulder 21 is mounted, and the upper edge of the said plate 22 comes in contact with the said shoulder. The said plate 22 may serve as a land side plate or a heel. A detachable pallet 23 is provided, which may be easily and readily applied to that side of the lower portion of the standard 1 opposite to the side thereof upon which the pallet portion 20 is disposed. The bearing or supporting surface of the pallet 23 is approximately coequal with that of the pallet portion 20. The said pallet 23 is provided upon its inner side with a shoulder 2a which is adapted to fit snugly under the shoulder 21 at the lower portion of the standard 1, and the said pallet 23 is provided with an upper flange 25, adapted to be secured to the intermediate lower portion of the standard 1 by means of a bolt 26, and the said pallet 23 is provided with a lower flange 27 adapted to lie under the shoulder 21 and which is secured in position against the side of the said standard 1 by means of the bolt 28. (Fig. 2 of the drawings best illustrates the manner in which the detachable pallet 23 may be applied to the lower portion of the standard 1).
When the parts are assembled as shown in Fig. 1 the share plates of a middle breaker may be mounted, as indicated by the dotted lines in the said figure, or, in lieu thereof,
sweep or lister plates may be mounted upon the pallet and pallet portion of the standard.
It is obvious that when the parts are assembled as a middle breaker, the plate 22 will serve as a heel. By detaching the pallet 23 a mold board and share may be applied to the pallet portion 20 in the manner indicated in Fig. 3 of the drawings, in which instance the plate 22 will serve as a land side plate, and the complete assemblage will effect a break plow.
From the above description it is obvious that by providing a standard of the configuration noted and the detachable pallet 23 of the peculiar configuration described, a plow is effected which may be readily transformed from a break plow into a middle breaker, and vice versa, and that, in either assemblage, the parts are compactly arranged for effectually performing their specifie functions.
Having thus described my invention, what claim as new, and desire to secure, by Letters Patent, is
1. A plow standard having at its side a shoulder, a pallet having a shoulder adapted to abut against the shoulder of the standard and having upper and lower flanges adapted to be secured to the side of the standard.
2. A standard having at its lower forward portion a fixed pallet disposed at one side and a shoulder disposed at its opposite side, a pallet adapted to be applied to the standard and having a shoulder adapted to fit under the shoulder thereof and having a flange for attachment with the side of the standard.
3. A standard having at its lower forward portion a fixed pallet disposed to one side and a shoulder disposed at its opposite side, a pallet adapted to be applied to the standard and having a shoulder for engagement with the shoulder thereof and having upper and lower flanges for attachment with the side of the standard.
t. A standard having at its lower forward portion a fixed pallet disposed at one side and a shoulder disposed at its opposite side, a pallet adapted to be applied to the standard and having a shoulder for engagementwith the shoulder thereof, and being provided with flanges occupying different planes, which flanges are adapted to be attached to the side of the standard.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
