jspeci fication of Letters Patent.-
Patented Get. 1%, 1915.
Original application filed January23, 1915, Serial No. 3,959. Divided and this application filed June 14,
Toedll whom it ma concern:
vented certain new. and useful Improvements ficat-ion. I
Myinventlonrelates to an improvemen 1n plows having for its ob ect to provldea novel and efiect-ive manner of attaching the Y plow standard to thebeam so as'to transfer to the beam, rather than to the bolts that connect the standard thereto, the thrusts and strains to which the beam is subjected in service.
In a pending application Serial No. 3959, of which this is a divisional application, I have shownand claimed certain novel means for the mounting of the plow point and,if.
desired, a sweep upon a standard formed by a bent bar of single thickness so asto reduce to a minimum the obstruction offered bythe standard in' plowing. One object of my present invention is to providemeans for fastening a standard of single thickness to the beam sothat the latter will to a large extent reinforce and securely hold thestandard therein andwill at the A same time permit its adjustmentto vary the angular disposition of the plow point relative to the beam for plowing at different depths: I I
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated-what I regardasthe preferred: embodiment of the principles upon which my present invention is based, but it is to be understood that I do not intend thereby to limit myself to the exact construction and arrangement of parts shown.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the plow beam with the standard connected thereto and shown in one of its adjusted positions. Fig. 2 is a similar View broken away to show the standard 7 in full elevation and in a different adjusted position. Fig. '3 is a cross sectional'view on the line of Fig. 1. I 1
Similar reference numerals refer to similar parts throughout the drawings. p
In the preferred embodiment of my. in-
vention which isillustrated in the drawings the plow is shown with a wooden beam 1 having handlesQ of usual construction, the
beam havingin its underface a narrow,'ver-' Serial na'easss.
tical, longitudinally disposed slot 3 extendisformed preferably of a single bent metal bar having at its forward end an upturned curved lug 6 in which I provide a series of bolt holes 7. The upper portion l of the standard which fits in the slot 3 is of substantial length and is pivotally connected at 1 its rear end tothe beam by'a cross bolt 8 disposed near the rear end of the slot 3. The rear vertical edge of the lug 6 and the series of bolt holes 7 therein are both struck on arcs from bolt 8 as a center and the rear wall 9 of the vertical extension of the slot 3 is struck on a similarcurve. A bolt 10 is passed through the beam and through one of the bolt holes 6 to attach the forward end of the standard to the beam adjustably so that the plow point 11 may be set at the desired angle. It will be noted that the standard is of single thickness'and' its foot portion is brought forward on a gradual curve to the'point of attachment thereto ofthe plow point 12. The rear end wall 13 of the slot 3 is "curved so that when the standard is set in the position shown in Fig. 2, the rear curved edge of the'standard beyond its pivot 8 will have an extended bearing. The holes for the bolts 8 and are designed to leave suflicient play to permit the standard to take its bearing against the beam in the manner which will now be described.
It being my purpose to so connect the standard tothe beam that the latter takes practically all of the strain from the fastening bolts, it will be noted that the rear curved face of the extension lug 6 will, in all operation positions, take a firm and solid bearing against the curved wall 9 of the slot, thus'relieving the bolts of all draft strain on the standard exerted rearward of the beam. It will be noted that the upper edge of the standardsection t will bear solidly against the top wall of the slot 3 above'tht bolt 8, thus taking'the up thrust of the standard off of the bolt 8. The rear curved wall 13 of the slot is designed to afford a greater bearingsurface forthestandard when adtobrace the standard not only against up thrust but also against rearward thrust slot 3 causes theside Walls of the slot to when its vertical lug 6 bears-only its ex treme upper end against the wall '9. The manner in which the standard fits into the brace the Standard against lateral thrust.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as'new and deslre to secure by Let ters Patent, 1s:-
.1. In a plow, the combination with a; beam, of a vstandard adjnsta'bly connected to the beam and formed by a-bent'v metal bar of single thickness, said bar having an upper portion of substantial length and sai'd 'beam having a longitudinal bottom slot which" snugly. receives said upper portion-of the meansto pivotal-1y connectsaid standard to the'beam. and abutting portions'onthe-beam' aco pies et this patent may be obtained for standard. and braces it against lateral strain,
and standard which are adapted tosustaintheth'rust strains of the standard.-v Y
'2. A plow comprising a beam having: in its underface a longitudinally disposed; slot which is shallow except at its forward: end
where its depth is increased by a vertical extension of the slot, a standard seated insaid slot and pivoted near thewrear end thereof to the'beam, a vertical extension on the forward end of the standard which is adapted to project into said vertical exten sion of the slot, the rear edge 01? said vertical extension on the standard being-struck on: an are from the pivot of the'standardas center, and means to fasten the forwa-i'd end otthe standardvin adjusted positions in the slot,;sa1d -n1eans being adaptedtopenmit the rear edge-of said standard extension-tobear against the-rear Wall ofthe vertical eXten-- sion ofthe slot.
A plow comprising bam having in its underface a. long tudinally disposed; slot;
which is shallow except. at its forward: end? i where 'itsdepth isincreased by ar vertical extension or the slot, a standard'seated in said slot. and-pivoted near rear end thereof to the beam, a vertical extension on the for- Ward end of the standard which isadapted to project into said'verticalextension. of the i slot, the rear wall of the slot and the rear: edgeo-f said vertical extension onthe 'stand-v' ard being struck on arcs it'rornthe pivot of the standard as a center, means to fasten'the forward-end of the ,standardiin'adjusted 'positions'i inthei slot-,i said pivot and fastening meansbeingz adapted to vpermit the standard at its fforward end to bear against thearear wall ot the vertical extension of the slot and v at its r'ear'end to bear a gainst the upvp er; wall i of' the: 'slot.-
