The strainer 11 is of inverted dish shape and preferably has a substantially flat top. The substantially vertical side 12' of the strainer is just deep enough to touchthe inner bottom surface of the sink and enable the top of the strainer to rest on the tops of the finger 6." At the center the strainer is depressed in making it, or countersunk to receive a screw head and a screw 13- passes through the strainer at this point and engages a threaded opening 20 formed in crossbar 10.- The screw-head rests in the countersink flush with the upper surface of. the strainer. The strainer has top openings 14 through which the bulk of the water passes, and side openings 15 which extend to the inner bottom surface of the sink and permit the escape of water after its level is lower than the top of the strainer. \Vithout these side openings in this kind of a drain connection some of the fluid would be trapped in the tub by the strainer. The fingers 6 and the bottom of the side wall of the strainer rest on the. bottom of the depression 3 ad jacent to the drain opening and the depth of the depiression is so calculated that, as
shown in ig. 1, the top of the strainer is approximately ,level with the main inner bottom surface of the sink. By this arrangement any utensils placed in the sink over or near the drain opening may rest perfectly level, the same as if no part of the connection projected within the sink.'
The drain pipe 10 may be connected to the nipple in any-convenient way but In a preferred construction the pipe is provided with a flange 17 which rests against the end of the nipple and a nut 18 engaging the screw thread on the nipple has a flange 19 1nwardly extending andengagmg flange 17 and serving to urge the latter tightly agalnst the end of the nipple.

The combination of a sink, the bottom of which is provided with a circular drain opening and a shallow depression surrounding the opening, a nipple passing through the openin and provided with fingers resting on the bottom of the depression adjacent to theopening, a nut engaging a screw thread on the nipple below the sink bottom, a water seal intermediate the nut and the outer bottom surface of the sink, a strainer inclosing the drain opening and the fingers on the nipple, the strainer being provided with top perforations and side perforations adjoining the inner surface of said depression and means for securing the strainer to the nipple.
