Application led Jennery le, i909.
To all whom it'mo'ny concern.' Be it known that We, lnwlnn L. Downs, yof Non? lllrighton, .Benner county, `Pennsylrenie, end donn t?. linnn, ot' llittsbnrg, sNorth Side, Allegheny county, Pennsylre nie, both citizens ol the United States, here invented e certain new end. useful Drain Connection, of which the following is especi'm iicetion. Our invention relates to drain connections for sinks, tubs, basins end the like.
- Throughout this speciiieetiontor the seke lolf brevity We will. describe the invention es nsed in connection with s sink, lont it is to be lili understood thet the invention .is applicable equally Well to tnbs or any other tublike vessels.
@or invention is designed' to he nsedprincipelly in connection with liiglfrgrnde sinks 2@ or'tubs, the inner snrleces oi which ere coV- ered with vitreous enamel. Hoeness of the clinrecter of' the drein connections which have heretofore been used on enameled, sinks,v it-hss been considered necessary to 25 provide e. recess in the sink bottom surrounding the 'drain opening. lt is exceedingly diioult to properly enamel motel surfaces having abrupt ongles such es ere ionnd in sinks provided with such n recess. In epplying the drain connection to sinks hei/ing suoli e recess, the .enamel adjacent to the opening is frequently crooked or crazed for reasons understood by those skilled. in this srt. Uur invention voids these dissdvon tages by providing en lenameled sink with e straight Welled drain o ening, the upper Iedge of which immediate y joins the nornnil inner bottom surface ol the sink. 'lhc seid sink surface rosy loe mede entirely free from 40 shnrp singles or abrupt changes in diriwetion.-
The parte of the drain connection which :tre
originally seperate from the sink are ed: ited to the style of the sink bottom and dlrziin o eninggdescribed and the connection is furtllier constructed and arranged so that the entirev fluid contents oi' the sink vmoy be dis charged through the drain opening, there being .no recess or trop formed within the sink by any port of the appliance which reteins my portion of the fluid.

@ne of the objects provided tor by the invention is to provide Ineens in this kind of e drain connection by whiehthe Weste Weiter tney be strained and .et the seine time sub stsntislly every drop of the fluid tney pese ont through the drain opening.v l 6e -The use ci our invention avoids eny tendency to chip orcraze the enamel surrounding the drain opening end et the sinne time the eppeernnce of such portions of the connecn tion es may be seen frorn Within the sink is 6e very 'ornamental sindv attractive.
.ln the accompanying drawing we show en exerniililying structure. embodying the involition, het it is to be understood that the invention is capable of embodiment in dit w ferent forms.
Figure l is s vertical section through s por-- tion of e. sink end drain connection.' ,Fig. 2 is en elevation ol'f the connection, the sink bottoni being shown in section on the center line of the drain opening. Fig. 3 is e. top View oi the nip le reni'oved from the other ports of the app ienne. Fig. l is-e top View of the stre-incr by itself.
Reference cherecter 1 designates s. sink or 80 the like, 2 the customary 'approximately leyel end horizontal inner bottom surfoce thereof, end 3, the drain opening, usually eironlin', having n. perfectly straight cylindrical VWell passing through the bottoni of the sink. B5
The drain opening is generally surrounded et the outside oi the 'sink bottom with e cir--` cular boss l to increase the thicknessnnd strength. of the sink bottom et this ,"oint. Sinks-or tn'bs of the class 4Withwhich t viis in- 90 vention is generally employed nre nsuelly covered on their inner surfece with 'vitreous enamel but the invention is also s. plieeble to vessels-Which are not so eneme ed and for this reason end for the sake of cleerness it is not attempted to show the enamel in the drawing. lt is to be noted es )ecielly the!) the inner bottom sui-hice of t e sink preserves its normel contour directly to the -drein opening end hes no abrupt changes of direction or recesses other than the drain opening itself. lt is possible forthisresson to perfectly enamel the sink bottom directly up to the drain opening on the plain or even surface Without the depression or recess,
thereby preventing the loss occasioned by this irregular shape of the recess either in manufacture or after the article has been in use.
A nipple 5 provided with radially extending fingers 6 is passed through the drain openlc ing so that the cylindrical iortion of the nip ple 7 extends below the ottom portion of the sink. The fingers then rest upon the inner bottom surface of the sink adjacent to the opening. The tubular portion 7 is exterior y threaded and a nut 8 engaging the thread compresses a gasket 9 against the boss 4 forming a water seal. The tubular portion of the nipple is discontinued considerably below the inner bottom surface of the sink and the fingers 6 are widely separated as may be seen in Fig. 3 so that. the nipple itself oilcrs no perceptible resistance to the flow of water elven at its lowest level through the drain o ening. Thenipple 5 has a cross-bar 10. T e strainer 11 is of inverted dish shape and preferably has a substantially flat top. The Asubstantially vertical side 12 of the strainer is just deep enough to touch the inner bottom surface of the sink and enable the top of the strainer to rest on the tops of the finger 6. At the center the strainer is depressed in making it, or countersunk to receive a screw head and a screw 13 Y asses through the strainer at this point andJ engages a threaded opening 14 formed in rcross-bar 10. The screw-head rests in the countersink flush with the upper surface of the strainer. The strainer has top openings 1a through which the bulk of the water passes, and side openings l5 which extend to the inner bottom surface of the sink and permit the escape of water after its level is lower than the top of the strainer. in this kind of a drain connection some of the fluid would be trapped in the tub by the strainer.
The drain pipe 16 may be connected to the nipple in any convenient way but in a preferred construction the pipe is provided with a flange 17 which rests against the end of the nipple and a nut 18 en aging the screw thread on the nipple has a ange 19 inwardly extending and engaging flangev 17 and serving to urge the latter tightly against the end of the nipple.
j We claim: 1.
