Description

gieten? Katy JOHN MCcLosKEY, or NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 87,4". .2, dated March 2, 1869.
MPROVELIENT IN STENCH-TRAPS AND OVERFLOWS FOR. IBASINS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all 'whom it may concern Be it knownthat I, J om: McCLosKnY, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved stench-Trap and Overflow for Bowls, Closets, &c.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
` This invention relates to a newandimproved method of constructing the stencli-tiaps and overllows ofwashbowls, sinks, water-closets, dto., whereby the same more eectually prevent the rising of noxious and unpleasant gases from the said bowls, sinks, Ste.
In the accompanying plate oi drawings- Figure l is a plan view of a bowl, or basin, with my invent-ion attached to the same.
Figure 2 is a central vertical sectional view of the same, taken in the line x x, iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The bowl, or basin, A, is of the same material and form as the wash or sink-bowls now commonly in use, and is furnished, upon the under side, with a hollow metallic attachment, B, as shown.
The attachment B commences at one side of the bowl A, near the top of the same, and passes lnearly around' the same, and so as to be deepest under the centre of .the bowl A, as shown, and yis bent outward and downward on the other side of said bowl A, at about the height of the bottom of the bowl, or basin A, and terminates in an outlet, Il, into any drain or ipe.
The attachment B must be of suficient size to carry olf any supply of water furnished to the bowl A, and so also as to receive the plug-tube C, and cont-ain a column of water in said attachment all around the plugtube C, to the height of the' bend in said attachment, or nearly to the bottom of the bowl A, so as entirely to coverthe orifices a', the water thus preventing the escape of the gases through said orifices In the bowl A,'at one side, and near the top of the same, are four or more orifices a, opening into the attachment B, as shown.
Through the bottom of the bowl A, and in the centre of the same, and also through the 'bottom of the attachment B, as' shown, is a hole to receive a plugtube, O.
The plug-tube O is provided with a ange on the upper end of the same, by means of which, and suitable packing, water is prevented from leaking around the same, and is furnished with a. movable plug, G, in the ordinary way.
Said tube C .is made of metal, of sucient length to extend through the bottom of` the attachment B, as' shown, and is provided at the lower end with a screwt-hread, to receive a nut or coupling, u, by means ofwhich, and suitable packing between said nut n and said attachment B, the escape of water around said tube C, from the inside of the attachment B, is prevented, and, by removing the nut n, the tube C can at any time be easily taken out, when necessary, for cleaning or repairs. l The tube O is provided, within the attachment B, with two or more orifices, a', opening into the inside of said attachment B, below the level of the bend n the same, and so as, when the plug Gis removed, the water contained in the bowl A will be discharged at the ontlet F, still leaving the inside of the attachment B nearly full of water, and above the level of the oriices a'.
Withinthe attachment B, so as to give a proper direction to the current of water when overflowing at the oriicesa., is a metallic partition, E, as shown.
The tube O is furnished with a strainer, e, as shown in the drawing.
The tube O is tightly closed at the bottom of the same, as shown.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plug-tube C, having orices a and strainer e', in combination with thc bowl A, provided with openings a, and the hollow metallic attachment B F, in which a partition, E, is placed, all constructed and ar ranged to operate substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JOHN MCCLOSKEY.
