Description
A. DAHL. SHEET METAL SHELF AND BRACKETS. APPLICATION FILED FEB.11,1909.
930,734. Patented Aug. 10, 1909.
ATTORNEYS UNlTED STATES PATENT. OFFICE.
ALBERT DAHL, OF NEW YORK, .N. Y.
sugar-METAL snnnr AND BRACKETS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Aunnrr DA'UL, a. subject of the Czar of Russia, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Sheet- Metal Shelf and Brackets, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved sheet metal'shelf and brackets combined, arranged for quick and convenient attachment to a wall or other support, and to allow of foldin the supporting brackets onto the shelf for convenient storage or transportation of the article.
The object is attained by providing a sheet metal shelf with depending integral flanges, forming bearings for the pivots of sheet metal brackets having integral nailing flanges at the back for attachment to a wal or other support.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the'accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improvement as applied, parts being in section;
shelf.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective View of one of the brackets with the pivot removed; and Fig. 4 is aperspective view of the improvement with the brackets folded onto the under side of the The sheet metal shelf A is provided with depending integral front and rear flanges A, A and end flanges A A to reinforce and strengthen the shelf A. The shelf A is provided with brackets B of sheet metal, adapted to be fastened by nails, screws or like fastening devices D to the plaster E and studs F. Each bracket has its upper end formed into an eye B for the reception of apivot C having its ends journaled in the front and rear flanges A, A of the shelf A. The back of each bracket B is provided with a nailing flange B bent at right angles to the shelf B, to fit against the plaster or other covering E of the wall. The brackets B are spaced about sixteen inches apart, to correspond to the usual distance from the center of one stud" F to the center of the next following stud F in the wall of the building,

flanges B in position on the studs 1* by nails, screws or like fastening devices l). The front edge B of each bracket B is beveled and doubled up so as to greatly reinforce and strengthen the bracket, at the same time avoiding a sharp front edge.
Now by the arrangement described, the brackets B can be readily folded onto the under side of the shelf A and confined within the flanges A, A A, A of the shelf A, so that the article takes up very little room and hence can be conveniently stored or shipped from one place to another. As shown in Figs. 1 and 4, the shelf A is provided with two brackets, but for longer shelves three or more brackets are employed to give the desired support to the shelf; but in each case the brackets are spaced apart to suit the studs used in the wall of the building.
In practice, the shelf and brackets are painted or j apanned, so as to give the article the desired neat appearance. By providing the nailing flanges 13 the article can be quickly and securely fastened in place on the wall or other support, without the aid of skilled mechanics.
Having thus described my invention, 1
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sheet metal shelf and brackets combined, comprising a sheet metal shelf provided with depending flanges, and brackets having pivots journaled in the front and back flanges of the said shelf, each bracket having a nailing flange at its back for attachment to a'wall or other support.-
2. A sheet metal shelf and brackets combined, comprising a sheet metal shelf provided with depending flanges, and brackets ets having pivots journaled in the front and back flanges of the said shelf, to allow of swinging the brackets into a folded position on the under side of the said shelf and wholly within the said flanges.
3. A sheet metalshelf and brackets combined, comprising a sheet metal shelf provided with depending flanges, and brackets having pivots journaled in the front and back flanges of the said shelf, to allow of swinging the brackets into a folded position on the under side of the said shelf and wholly within the said flanges, each bracket being provided at its back with a nailing flange.
4. A sheet metal shelf and brackets combined, comprising a sheet metal shelf providedwith depending flanges, and brackets In testimony whereof I have signed my havin pivots journaled in the front and name to this specification in the presence of back anges of the said shelf, each bracket two subscribing witnesses. having a nailing flange at its back for at- ALBERT DAHL.
