bag-frame fastener or lock showing one embodiment of the principles of my present invention, the same comprising a main chambered shell or casing 5 which 1s open at the -bottom and is provided with suitable fastening means, preferably at its ends and preferably 1n the form ofdownwardly extending lugs or tongues 6 which are passed through .correspondingly formed perforations or openings in the upper portion of the framesection 2, and are bent over against the under and inner face of said portion of the frame-section to innnovably and positively secure the said main casing or shell in its position uponv said frame-section 2. ln one of its sides, as 7, the said casing or shell 4 is provided, in this instance, with two hasp or holding-catch receiving openings, as 8'. 1n its upper side 9, the said main casing or shell is made with an opening 10 of a vpeculiar shape, said opening being bounded by an arc-shaped edge portion 11, which is approximately a little more than a semi-circle, andby the straight edge- portions 12 and 13, and a small Varc shaped edge portion 14 which is centrally located between the edgeportions 12 and 13, substantially in the manner shown in Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings. The upper surface 9 of the said main casing or shell 4 is also provided at suitable points near its longitudinal sides with elongated openings or slots 15. Slidably arranged upon the upper side 9 of the said main shell or casing 4 is another shell or casing 1G, preferably of the configuration shown, the said shell or casing 16 being provided with a centrally disposed part 17 which is slightly wider and slightly higher than the said shell or casing 16, and is formed in its upper surface with a circular hole or opening 18. Extending downwardly from the lower edges ofthe sides 19 of the said sliding shell or casing 16 are suitable lugs or tongues 20, said lugs or tongues projecting through the elongated openings Vor slots 15 in the upper face 9 of the said main shell or casing 4 and being bent over and beneath a hasp or catchretaining slide-plate 21, said lugs er tongues being arranged in cut-away portions 23 in the longitudinal edges of the plate, for slidably securing said slide-plate 21 within the upperchambered portion of the main shell or casing 4 and against the inner face of the said main shell or casing 4, as will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings. rlhe said plate 21 is also provided with a circular hole or opening 22, corresponding to the hole or opening 18 in the part 17 of the sliding shell or casing 16, and extending downwardly at right angles, approximately so, from each longitudinal edge of the said plate 21 are suitably formed guide-members o1' elements 24 and 25 which register with and slide against the inner faces of the longitudinal sides 7 of the said main casing or shell 4, as will be clearly evident from an inspection of Figs. 3, 4 and 11 of the drawings, and the said members or elements 24 and 25 extending from the one edge of the said plate 21, under no rmal conditions having portions thereof located directly back of the hasp or catch-receiving openings 8 in the one side of the said main casing or shell 4, more clearly illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. Extending from one end-portion of the said plate 21 is a tongue or finger, as 2G, upon which is arranged the one end-portion of a coiled spring 27, said spring having its other end bearing upon the inner face of the end .2S of the main casing or shell 4, as clearly represented in Figs. 4, 5, S and 9 of the drawings. The purpose of this spring 27 is to normally force the plate 21 and its parts into the position indicated in said Figs. 3, 4 and 8, for engagement with the edge-portions of the members or elements 24 and 25 of suitably formed hook-shaped engaging members 23() of a hasp-plate 29 which is suitably secured to the side of the bag-frame section 3, as will be clearly evident.
Rotatably arranged upon the upper surface of the part 17 of the previously mentioned sliding casing or shell 16 is a knob or tingerpiece 31 with which is suitablyy con nected and extends in a downward direction and into and through the hole or perfo ation 18 in the upper surface of said part 17 the flat shank 32 of a locking post, said post. having its lower end-portion 33 extending into and through the hole or opening 10 in the upper face 9 of the main casing or shell 4, and rotatably arr*l nged in the hole or perforation 22 of the hasp or eateh-retaining` plate 21, as clearly shown in said Figs. 9, 1() and 11 of the drawings. The said post is provided between its shank 32 and its` lower end-portion 33 with oppositely extending wings or projections 84 and 35, the wing 35 being of greater depth than the wing 34, so that the lower portion 36 of the wing 85 extends into and is movably arranged in the hole or opening 10 of the main casing or shell 4, while the lower portion 37 of the wing or projection 34 is located above said hole or opening 10 and is adapted to be movably arranged above a part of the upper face 9 of the said main casing or shell 4, as will presently appear.A The said post with its projections or wings 34 and 35 is at all times maintained in either of the positions indicated in Figs. 6 to 1() inclusive, by means of a suitably formed liat spring 33,which has its central portion 39 bearing against the faces on one side of said projections or wings 34 and 35 and having its ends 40 bearing against the inner face of one of the sides 7 of the main casing or shell 4, as clearly illustrated in said Fig. 10 fof the drawings.
Havingthus described the general construction of the various parts of the bagframe fastener or look, iand having assembled the various parts in the manner illustrated in the several figures of the drawings, suppose the wings or projections 34 and 35 are in the positions represented in saidFigs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, and that the hookshaped members 30 of Vthe hasp or catchplate 29 have been forced in retaining engagement with the members or elements 24 and 25, in the mannerfindicated in Fig. 4 of the drawings, then upon endeavoring to slide the casing or shell 16 in the direction of thev arrow in said Fig. 8, it will be seen thatA the marginal edge 11 of the hole or opening 10 acts as a stop against which the lowerportion 36 of the wing or projection 35 comes in contact, so that there can be no movement of the said casing or shell 16, and thus the two frame- sections 2 and 3 will be held intheir locked and closed relation. However, by first turning the knob or iingerpiece 31 from right to left, the positions of the wings 34 and will become reversed, as indicated in Fig. 9 of the drawings, being held in that position by the action of the flat spring 38. rlhe said wing 35 thereby having been removed from its engagement with the stop formed by said edge 11, the said casing or shell 16 and with it the plate 21 can be moved in the direction of the arrow as to the positions shown in said Fig; 9, the members 24 and 25 at the same time being withdrawn from their holding engagement with hookshaped engaging members 30 of the hasp or catch-plate 29, and the two frame- sections 2 and 3 can be opened or separated. As soon as the knob or tingerpiece is turned from left to right to its normal initial position, so as to return the projections 34 and 35 to their original positions shown in Fig. 8, the compressed coils of the spring 27 simultaneously return the casing or shell 16 to its former position, and with it the said plate 21, so that its elements or members 24 and 25 are once more brought into the holding or retaining engagement with the members 30 of the hasp or catch-plate 29 of the previously closed frame- sections 2 and 3, all of which is evident and will be clearly understood from an inspection of the several figures' ofthe drawings.
From an inspection of Figs. 6 and 7 of the drawings, it will be seen that the knob or iingerpiece 31 and the post with its wings or projections 34 and 35 can be turned on one side of the hole 10 only, in the directions of the arrows y and e, the straight edgeportions 12 and 13 acting as stops to prevent the parts being turned too far, and the fiatspring 38 acting with a snap at each halfturn of the post and its wings brings these parts to a complete stop at each turn, so that the parts of the bag-frame fastener or look will always be in their right positions for holding the two frame-sections in their closed relation or for permitting the said framesections to be opened according to the relative positions of the projections or wings 34 and 35 of the knob-operated post.
The operation of the various parts will be clearly understood from the foregoing description and from an inspection of the several figures of the drawings; and it will be seen that l have produced a simply constructed and easily operated bag-fastener or ylock, the parts of which have been reduced to a minimum and which can not get out of order. l am fully aware that changes may be made in the arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the same without departing from the scope of this invention as described in the foregoing specification and as defined in the claims which are appended to the said specification. Hence I do not limit my invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of the devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do I confine myself to the exact details of the construction of the said parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
