Description

B. HELLMAN.
KBYHOLE STOP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 30, 1909.

Y MII' BENJAMIN HELLMAN, OF GHCAGO, ILLINOS.
KEYl-EOLE-STOP.
Specification of Letters Eaten't.
atented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed January 3G, 1969. Serial No. 475,232.
T o all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that l, BENJAMIN HELLMAN, a citizen oi the United States, residing` at Chicago, county of Cook, and State cl' illinois, have invented certain new and usel'ul lmprovements in Keyhole-Stops, oil which th following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety devices Yfor doors and particularly to suoli devices as described in my co-pending application, Ser. No. 475,231.
7ihe object oi my invention is to provide a device of the character mentioned which will be adapted to be inserted into a key hole after the door has been locked and the key removed, the same being adapted to act in the capacity oi' a stop so as to prevent the insertion 0i' another key into the key hole from the opposite side of the door.
It is a known fact that not infrequently are houses entered and burglarized through the aid of a skeleton or master key in the possession of the burglar, it being an easy task for a burglar so provided to gain access to a house through the door thereoi.
lt is therefore the object of my invention to eliminate the possibility ol' the use oi' such keys for such purposes by the provision, as before stated, o'l a stop adapted to be inserted and securely held in a key hole.
A still further object ol' my invention is to provide a device as stated which will be highly eilicient and one which will be simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
l/Vith these objects in view my invention consists generally in a stop characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part olthis specification, and in which, I
Figure l is a Yl'ront elevation ol a portion ol a door upon which is arranged the preierred form of my device, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, portions being broken away so as to better illustrate the construc tion of my device.
Referring now to the drawings l indicates an ordinary door which is provided with any ordinary or preferred iorrn of lock, 2 indicating the casing of the latter and 3 the key hole extending through said door and lock casing.
fr indicates an elongate member preferably ol' cast metal from the central portion oll one of the surta-ces oi which perpendicularly extends a portion 5, the same being preferably Vformed integrally with the portion 1l. Said portion 5 is so formed as to be adapted to be snugly received in a key hole ol' ordinary l'orin, the same being oil such a length as to extend entirely through said key hole as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The end portions oi the member -l are provided with perforations or slots 6, the same being adapted to snugly receive eyes 7 provided upon and projecting from the inside surface oi' the door l at either side of the key hole therein. A lock pin 8, the extremities thereof being adapted to removably rest in said eyes, is obviously adapted to hold said member l securely in position upon said door. Ears 9 rearwardly projecting from the upper and lower edges of the portion l act in the capacity oi finger pieces, the same facilitating the ready arrangement upon or removal from a door, of my device.
By the provision oi a device of suoli con struction it is obvious that upon turning the lock and removing the key therefrom, the former may be inserted into the key hole and may be securely held in place therein, thereby preventing the insertion of a key from the opposite side of the door and hence obvia-ting the possibility of unlocking the door until said device is removed, which removal thereof is only possible from the inside.
YWhile l have shown what l deem to be the preferable form of my invention, l do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device of the class described, comprising in combination an elongate plate, a projection extending forwardly from said plate and adapted to be received in and eX- tend substantially the entire length of a key hole, said plate having slots at the end portions thereof, eyes adapted to be received in said slots and a lock pin adapted to rest in said eyes, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described, comprising an elongate metal plate, an integral projection forwardly and perpendicularly exto receive eyes provided one at either side of l tending from the central portion of said plate adapted to be snugly received in and extend substantially entirely through a key hole, slots provided in the end portions of said plate adapted to receive eyes provided one at either end of the key hole7 and a lock pin adapted to rest in said eyes, substantially as described.
3. A device of the class described, cornprising an elongate metal plate, an integral projection forwardly and perp endicularly eX- tending from the central portion of one of the surfaces of said plate Which plate is adapted the key hole, a removable lock pin adapted to rest in said eyes7 and finger pieces rearwardly projecting from the central portions of the upper and lower edges of sai-d plate,
substantially as and for the purpose specified.
ln testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
