APPLIOATION FILED MAR.21,190B. I

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' EDMUND ECKART, or NEW-ROCHELLE, New YORK.
COMPARTMENT-CAN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed March 21, 1908. Serial No. 422,466.
To alllwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND ECKART, a cltlzen of the United States, and a resident of New Rochelle, county of VVestche'ster, and
State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Compartment Cans, of w ich the following is a specification.
My invention relates to cans of the kind used for storing and shipping ingredients which are intended to be mixed a short time prior to use, as for instance, paints, enamels,
' and bronzes, and hasfor its object to provide such cans with suitable receptacles for containing each of the ingredients separated from each other.
My invention will be fully described hereinafter and the features of novelty will be pointed out in the appended claim.
lln, the. accompanymg drawings, Figure I. is a Vertical sectional view of my improved can; Fig. Ill. is a plan view of the upper rece tacle with the cover removed; and Fig.
,inixing vessel. It is provided with a flange B by means of which it may easily be ried off by means of an: instrument inserte be tween the flange and the body of the can A.
C is a receptacle intended to contain another ingredient, preferably the solid ingredient of the aint, enamel, bronze or other substance. his receptacle isprovided with a dished bottom C, a portion of which C extends above the flange B This bottom is adapted to fit closely within the cover B and to be held within the same by friction. This flange C forms a shoulder by means of which the receptacle 0 may be pried away from the cover B by means of asuitable instrument inserted between the said flange and the flan e B.
T e receptacle 0 is closed by a cover D having a flange D. border to permit the cover D to be readily pried away from the receptacle C, said receptacle is provided at its upper periphery with a flange C which flange preferably slopes downwardly, and is prefer- .ably provided with upwardly die-pressed The cover'D may beads or projections, C. readily be removed by inserting asuitable instrument'between the flange D and the flange C the beads C serving to preventsuch flanges from coming too close together when the cover is forced down upon the receptacle, and the upper can is forced into the cover of the lower can. The flange C is preferably made to extend beyond the flange D, so as to act as a guide for the instrument as it is being inserted 1 between the two flanges.
The cover may be made of any suitable material but is preferably made of tin or other metallic su stance. I
The compartment can, constructed in accordance wlth my invention has the advantage of presenting a unitary structure which, without any additional means for uniting the two compartments nevertheless is so strongly united as not to be separable into its component parts with any amount of rough handling; while at the same time the component parts are readily separated when necessary, y the use of a suitable instrument. The bottom of the upper receptacle does not come into contact with the liquid substance in the compartment A and the two compartments may therefore be placed side by side upon the table without soiling the same, which is not the case where the upper can forms the cover for the lower can as 1n some structures now upon the market.
Changes and modifications may be made in the details of-the construction of the can without departing from the spirit of my invention. 5
I claim as-my invention:
A com artment-can comprising a recep tacl'e, a dished cover for said receptacle having an outwardly extending flange, a'second receptacle having a reduced portion arran ed to fit tightly within said dished cover and 'eing further provided with an upwardly inclined portion which projects over said outwardly extending flange of the cover so as to be spaced therefrom, a downwardly extending flange on said second receptacle at the upper portion thereof, a cover for the second receptacle having a flange adapted to projeet scribing witnesses; this 20th day of March, over said. downwardly inclined flange and 1908.
s aced projections on ene of said last named anges for maintaining them out of Contact EDMUND ECKART' 5 With each other. 7 'Witn'e'ss'es:
In witness whereof I have hereuntp sub- CHAS. H. ENGLE,
scribed my name, in the presence of two sub JOHN SULLIVAN.
