Description

PATBNTED JAN. 16, 1906,
C. W. HOFPA. MEDICINE GLASS.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 28. 1905.
aftommxgs CHARLES HOFFA, OF GARRETT, PENNSYLVANIA MEDICINE-GLASS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed February 28,1905. Serial No. 247,785.
To all whont it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. Born, a citizen of.the United States, residing at Garrett, in the county of Somerset and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Medicine-Glasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a medici.neglass; and its object is to provide a device of this character having separate receptacles for containing medicine and water, the water being disposed in such a manner as to carry the medicine with it when passing from the glass into the mouth of the person using the same.
As is well known, when medicine is mixed with water in an ordinary glass more or less of it sticks to the receptacle and does not pass into the mouth with the water. As a result the patient does not take the entire dose.
The object of my invention is to provide two receptacles which are so disposed in relation to each other that all of the medicine will be washed into the month by the water.
The invention consists of a receptacle of any preferred form, the outlet of which is preferably arranged at an incline to the bottom of the receptacle and is inclosed by a flange so shaped as to form a small troughshaped recess for medicine. This recess is located close to the edge of the receptacle, and by placing a proper quantity of medicine within it after the receptacle has been filled and then tipping the device the water will flow outward over the recess and will wash the contents thereof into the mouth of the person taking the medicine.
The invention also consists in further novel construction and combinat on of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved medicine-glass. Fig. 2
is a longitudinal section therethrongh, showing the'position in which the glass is to be held when containing water and a dose of medicine and prior to emptying the same; and Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the device when in the position shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the body of the receptacle, preferably formed of glass and of a frusto-conical contour. This body may be graduated to indicate teaspoonfuls and ounces. The upper or largest portion of the receptacle is provided with the substantially conical top 2, which is integral therewith and has an outlet-opening 3 at one side of the center thereof. This opening is surrounded by a flange 4, which increases in width toward the apex or center of the top 2. That portion of the flange extending from the apex is concavoconvex in cross-section to form a recess 5, which is suflicien tly deep when the receptacle is held in a horizontal position to contain a desired quantity of medicine.
It will be noticed by referring to Fig. 2 that when the glass is in a horizontal position the top 2 thereof will prevent any water con tained within the receptacle from flowing through the outlet 3 when the recess 5 is in a position to receive and hold medicine.
In using the device herein described a desired quantity of water or other liquid is placed within the receptacle, the quantity therein being readily determined by the graduations. The device is then placed in a horizontal position and a required quantity of medicine poured into the recess 5. \Vhen the glass is tilted, the liquid contained within the body 1 thereof will flow outward into the recess .5 and will, as is obvious, wash out all of the medicine contained therein.
By using a device such as herein described no residue will be left within the glass, and the objection of holding bad-tasting medicine within the month until a drink of water can be taken is entirely overcome. The entire device can be readily molded in a single piece of glass or other material and forms an attractive and convenient article of use.
It will be noted that the narrowest portion of the flange 4 is close to the base of the conical top 2, and therefore the glass can be utilized for drinking purposes by placing this narrow portion of the flange in the mouth, and the liquid contents of the bodyl can therefore flow uninterruptedly from the glass into the mouth of the user.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. As a new article of manufacture a glass formed in a single piece of material comprising a graduated body having an integral conical cover provided with an outlet Which is eccentrically arranged therein, said body being adapted to hold liquids when placed in a vertical or horizontal position, and a flange of varying Width surrounding the outlet and integral With the body, the Widest portion of the flange being located at the center of the top and having a recess therein, the bottom of which curves gradually from the outlet to the edge of the flange, whereby liquid is caused to flow from the outlet and over all portions of the bottom of the recess.
2. As a new article of manufacture a glass formed in a single piece and having an integral top provided With an outlet, said outlet being surrounded by a flange having a spoonshaped recess therein constituting a secondary receptacle, the bottom of said secondary receptacle being gradually curved from the outlet-opening t0 the outlet end of the recess.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
CHARLES W. HOFFA.
