COMBINED TABLE, CHAIR, AND ICE-CHEST.

To all-whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARY J. h IULLTKIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mena, in the county of Polk, State of Arkansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Tables, Chairs, and IceChests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appert-ains to make and use the same. This invention relates to combined tables, chairs and ice chests, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed and convenient device adapted more particularly for use by campers, and tourists, and which may be readily transported and transformed from a chair into a table when required without detaching any of the parts.

WVith these and other objects in view the invention consists in a receptacle for ice and food products having upwardly extending spaced arms and a hinged seat to enable the device to be employed as a chair and with a table top swingingly connected to the arms and adapted when not in use to be folded into a relatively small size and disposed for use as the back of the chair and adapted to be disposed horizontally upon the arms when required as a table.

The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a side view of the improved device when arranged as a table. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the improved device when arranged as a table. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4.4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view in section on the line 55 of Fig. 3.

The improved device comprises a receptacle or base portion for holding the ice and food products, and thus adapted for use as an ice chest, and is formed with a vertical back portion 10, a vertical front portion 11, and vertical side portions 12--13, the vertical portions being provided at their junctures with corner posts 14.

Disposed within the vertical walls and spaced from the bottom is a transverse member 15 having a central aperture 16 and covered with sheet metal 17, the sheet Speeification of Letters latent.

metal having numerous apertures 18 above the opening 16 to provide for ventilation and also to provide for the escape of the water from the ice when melting, the ice to provide the necessary cooling effect being disposed upon the sheet metal member 17, as hereafter explained.

Disposed transversely of the casing formed by the vertical walls intermediate the height of the members 1()1218 is another transverse member 19 having a central opening 20, the member 19 being disposed at about the usual height of an ordinary seat or about eighteen or twenty inches from the ground.

Connected across the inner face of the corner posts 141; and bearing by their lower edges upon the transverse member 15 are two plates 21-22 forming small compartments 23-24- with the member 15 as the bottom of the cmnparti'nents and adapted to receive food products which it is designed to keep cool but which it is not desired to keep in more direct contact with the ice, the compartments 232 L being readily accessible through the opening 20 in the member 19.

Connected across the inner faces of the corner posts 14- above the transverse member 19 are two plates 25-26 similar to the plates 2122 and forming small compartments 27-28 with the transverse member 19 as the bottom of the compartments, the small compartments designed to contain any articles such as knives, forks, spoons, and the like and readily accessible from above the members 2526. Hinged at 29 to the transverse member 19 is a seat member 30 which also serves as a closure to the aperture 2-0. The corner posts 14L- and the vertical members 101213 extend for a considerable distance above the member 19, while the vertical member 11 extends only tothe upper face of the member 19, and the seat member 30 bears over the upper edge of the member 11, as shown.

Disposed upon the upper edges of the side members 12-13 and likewise bearing upon the posts 14 are arm rests 3182, the latter having longitudinal recesses 33-34. The side members 1213 are provided preferably with handles 35--36 to enable the device to be more readily handled.

The arm rests 3l-32 extend rearwardly of the vertical member 10 and attached to the arm rests 3l-32 within the longitudinal rests 33 3% are staples 3788, and swinging upon these staples are links 3940, the free ends of the links connected movably by staples 4ll42 to a table top member 43, the latter bearing by its lower edge at tl upon the ground rearwardlyof the vertical memher 10, the table top being then supported at a slight backward-inclination'by the rearward extensions of the arm rests and forming an efficientback to the seat when not in use, as shown in Fig. 3. The member 43 is of the links 39- l0 and disposed fiatwise' upon. the arm rests 31-82, the links folding into the forward portions of the recesses 33 -34: and thuspermitting the top 43' to bear firmly upon the arm rests, as shown in Figs. 3 and l. The leaves t74:8 are then flattened out and secured in any suitable manner preferably by buttons 495O swing-V ing by pivots 5l52 upon the table top member 4L3, as shown, the leaves being thus held in longitudinal alinement with the table top and extending the area of the table top, as will be obvious. Hooks 53-54 are con- 'nectcd to the table top &3 and adapted to engage staples 55-56 in theside members 1213and thus hold the table firmly in position and preventing its accidental dis- I placement. The links fitting within the recesses 3334 effectually support the table top from lateral movement either when in vertical or horizontal position, while at the same time the links are concealed within the recesses when the table top' is arranged in horizontal position.

A bolt of suitable construction and represented at56 is connected to the leaf 48 and adapted to engage over the leaf 17 and enter a'keeper 57 upon the leaf 47 and thus hold the leaves in closed position relative to the table top 43 when the improved device is used as a chair or when being transported.

The improved device may be constructed of any suitable material but will preferablyflf be of wood and as light as possible consistent with the strains to whichit will be subjected,

and may be of any requiredsize but will generally be of the size of an ordinary chair of the Morris form.

' What is claimed, is 1. In a device of the class described, a receptacle constituting a seat and having ele--:'

vated sides forming arm rests to the seat, sa1d arm rests having longitudinal recesses m their upper faces, a table top, and links connected at their ends respectively to the table top and to the arm rests within the re- 7 cesses thereof, the table top forminga back to the seat when in vertical positionand Q forming a table when bearing in horizontalposition upon the arm rests with the links concealed within the recesses.

2. In a device of the class described, a receptacle constituting a seat and having ele vated sides forming arm rests to the seat, said arm rests having longitudinal recesses in their upper faces, a table top, the table top forming a back to the seat when in vertical vposition and forming a table when bearing in horizontal position upon the arm 7 rests, and connecting means between the table top and arm rests and concealed within the recesses when thetable top is arranged in horizontal position and bearing upon the arm rests.
