PENCIL ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed lay 15,
Patented July 20, 1909.
1908. Serial No. 433,081.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I MIGHEAL E. Dananar, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eureka, in the county of Woodford and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pencil Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved pencil attachment ada ted for use to cover and protest the penci point and also for use as a letter opener, aper cutter, encil sharpener fingernail c this invention being to provide an improved device of this character which mav be readily attached to and used in connection with an ordinary lead encil and which may be produced at smal cost.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pencil provided with in improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a detail ovation of the attachment with the blade in retracted position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on an enlarged scale through the pencil and the attachment.
My improved attachment 1 which is adapted for use in connection with an ordinary lead pencil a has a body which is 'made of sheet metal bent to form a tubular portion 2 open on one side as at 3 and a sheath rtion 4 of rectangular form cross sec-tic y, the
said sheath portion being opposite the open- 3 on one side of the tubular portion. Said tubular portion is of such diameter as to enable it to fit on the pencil and to be moved longitudinally thereon. The metal plate of which the bed of the attachment is formed, is spring meta so that the divided sides 5 of the tubular portion which embraces the pencil constitute spring clamps which engage opposite sides 0 the pencil so that the pencil is frictionally engaged by the said tubular portion of the body of the attachment and ence such attachment is held frictionally on the pencil at any desired point. [he sheath portion 4 of the body of the attachment is provided in its outer side with a longitudinal slot 6. At one end of the said outer wall of the sheath is a spring arm 7 which also bears against the pencil and eaner and the 'ke, the ob ect oi holds the attachment in the desired position thereon.
Within the sheath 4 is a longitudinally l movable blade 8 which may be moved inwardly in the sheath so as to be entirely covered thereby or may be extended therefrom as shown in Fig. 1 for use. A step element 9, here shown as a screw stud, operates in the slot 6 and enga es a threaded opening near the inner end 0 the said blade, said step element coacting with the ends of the slots 6 to limit the extent of movement of the blade.
It will be understood that the attachment may be placed at either end of the pencil to cover and protect the point of the pencil or the rubber eraser at the opposite end thereof. It will also be understood that the attachment is exceedingifi useful in cutting paper, sharpening penc' and for other like u ses.
Having thus described the invent-ion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A pencil attachment of the class described comprising a. plate of sheet metal having a den led central ortion formin a cross sectionally iectangu r sheath, sai sheath havan inner wall, an outer wall, and side walls, said outer wall having a longitudinal slot and being further provided at one end with a spring arm formed integral therewith and serving to bear on a ncil, the terminal portions of said plate eing substantially semi-tubular and forming spring clas s to engage the pencil and {nationally hol the same between them, a blade mounted in the sheath for longitudinal movement therewith and having a threaded opening and a stop screw engaging and extending throu h the threaded opening in said blade and a so extending through and movable longitudinally in said slot.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
