onncx rRornomrne, DEVICE This invention relates to checlcprotecting devices. It is particularly directed to a.de-' vice for inutilating portions of written papers to prevent forging alteration thereof.
fountain pen, pencil or the like article-so that p the same may "be conveniently carried on the person and ready for-usetwhen'signing checks and the like papers. p
A further ob]ect of th1s invent] on is to provide a device of the character described-which shall be neat and compact in construction, relatively lllGX'P'GDSlVB to manufacture, easy to manipulate, and yet practical andelficient' to a highdegree in use;
Other obgects oftliis inventionrwill'inpart be obvious-and in part hereinafter pointed out.- 1
The invention accordingly consists in the features of construction, combinations-ofelements, and arrangement of parts which will be exemplified in the construction hereinafter described, and of which thescope of applica tion will be indicated in the following claims; In the accompanying drawings," in which is shown one of the various possible illus trative embodiments of this invention;
Fig. 1. is a perspective view of a fountain pen cap embodying the inventionshown in position for mutilating a portion of a check Fig. 2is a cross-sect1onal'v1ew'taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig; 3 is a cross-sectional viewtalren'on Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional VIQW' ,taken' 'on line H of Fig".- 2'; and
Fig. 5 is a SIClGVVlQW of a fountain pen embodyingrt-he invention showing'the cap in I position when using the pen-forwriting.
Referrmgan detail to the drawings, designates a fountain pen comprising the i Application filed February '11, 1929: Serial N 0. 339,063:
saicltubula-r member isprovided with :an 'in'-- ternal threaded portion 21 adapted to cooperate' with threads of the barrel portion 11. for attachingthe cover to closethe' *fountain pen in the usual manner. Said open end portion 20 isadapted'for frictionally're 1 ceiving the rear end portion 16 ofthe body in the usual manner for attachingithe cover to the rear of the pen as shownin :Fig; 5. i
Incorporated into the" cap p0rt ion 12 is the means for nnrtilatingportions ofi a'writ tenipaper suchras a check and'the likeyfor' preventlng alteration of the' writing. The: cap 12 is provided with anarrow diametric:

The outer surfaces 35; of said cylinders "84: :are' prefer ably knurled, serrated or RridgedAin-f any "vice actuated in For guiding the cylinders over desired portions of the check, member 40 is slidably mounted on the cap 12. Said member 40 comprises a circular discportion 41 loosely fitted within the-cylindrical portion 18. Integrally formed with said disc is an exten sion '42 passing thru slot 28 and terminating in. an enlarged finger piece 48, having a curved, knurled outer "surface 44. Said piece 48preferably extends beyond the sides of. said slot 28 as at 43a. thus providing guiding means for said stop member. In-
tegrally formed with said disc 41 diametrically opposite to extension 42, is an extension 45 passing thru slot 29 and terminating in a spring clip member 46 pressing against the outer surface of the cap member for retaining the stop member in any adjusted position to which it may be moved.
In using the device 10. for indenting or mutilating checks, the :stop member'may be moved, by pushing the finger piece 43, to any desired adjusted position. The check maythenbe passed thru the split 22, 23, 24 to bring .the edge 25 of said check into contact with the outer surface 51 of the disc 41. Movement of the cover with respect to the check may thereafter be affected for mutilating the writing ona/straight line. To nutilatewriting further from or closer to saidedge 25, the stop member need merely be pushed to the proper position and the desimilar manner.
If desired, when the cap 12 is not in use for indenting checks and the like, a thimble 13 may be frictionally fitted over the end of said cap to cover the split port-ion.
It will now be seen that a handy, convenient, check protector is provided whichis constantly available for use, since it is carried with and forms part of the fountain pen. In this connection, it will be noted also that the invention may be embodied in'practical form eitherby manufacturing the fountain pen cap portion with the check protecting device as a separate unitary. article, the cap be ing dimensioned and otherwise constructed to correspond in size and shape to the standard fountain pens on the market, or by manufacturing fountain pens or the like articles complete with the specially constructed cap.
In the former event, the cap made in accordance with the invention will replace in the hands of the user the cap of the standard fountain pen owned by him.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a device in which the several objects of this invention are achieved, and which is well adapted to meet the conditions of practical use.
As variouspossibleembodiments might be made of the above invention, and as various changes might be made in the embodiment set forth, it is to be understood that all matter hereinset-forth or shown in the accompanying drawings is to be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the character'described, a tubular member closed at one end and open at the other end, said closed end of said member being split for receiving a sheet of paper, means mounted within said member for mutilating a portion of said sheet, a cap member removably attached to said tubular member at said closed end, and an adjustable stop member slidably mounted within said tubular member adapted to contact the edge of said sheet.
2. In adevice of the character described, a tubular member, one end of said member being split for receiving a sheet of paper,
means mounted within said member for mutilating a portion of said sheet, an adjustable stop member associated with said' tube adapted to contact the edge of said sheet, and a spring clip member attached to said stop member adapted to press against the outer surface of said tubular member for retaining said stop member against move ment.
3. In a device of the character described, a tubular member, means for perforating papermounted in said tube, said tube being provided with a longitudinal slot, and an abutment member slida-bly mounted in said slot, said member having a portion extending'within said tube and a portion extending outside of said tube and adapted to press against the outer surface of said tube.
4. In a device of the character described, a tubular member provided with a longitudinal slot, an annular disc slidable within said tube, a spring clip on the outer side of said tube adapted to retain said disc against sliding movement and a portion interconnecting said clip and disc, extending thru said slot.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
