CHECK PROTECTOR Filed Sept. 15, 1958 INVENTOR. Y 'MLL/HM 7? DUFFE) ATTORNEYS Patented Mar. 12, 1940 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE A CHECK PROTECTOR William R. Dufiey, San Antonio, Tex.
Application September 15, 1938, Serial No. 230,058
1 Claim.
This invention relates to a check protecting device and has for one of its objects the construction of a protector of compact form which is, so arranged that a fountain pen, pencil or other writing implement to which it is applied may be used as a handle for operating the abrading member.
An additional object is to make an article which shall be simple in construction whereby it may be distributed as an advertising medium, or may be sold independently and applied by the user for the intended purpose. invention provides a protector which may be readily slipped on or oil the pen, or pencil body II and which, when so applied may be used for defacing a check for the purpose of protecting the drawer against modification thereof.
Referring now to the drawing, Fig. l is a side view of a protector embodying my invention but ill illustrated on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 2-2 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the use of the device in defacing a check.
In the embodiment illustrated, the protector :5 comprises an abrading roller 10, the outer surface of which is serrated or otherwise treated to cut or abrade the surface of the check. The roller is mounted to rotate freely upon a body I l which is shown in the form of a tubular cap that may 30 be open at one end and closed at the other, and that is intended for application to the end of a pencil or pen in a convenient and satisfactory manner.
The roller may be held against axial move- 35 ment on the cap by shoulders l2 and I3 which are formed integrally with the cap and preferably in In this connection, the.
the shape of annular corrugations. or rings that project outwardly from the cap. In one form, the shoulder i2 comprises a bead or flared portion adjacent the end of the cap, while the shoulder l3 comprises an annular corrugation 5 that is disposed intermediate the ends of the cap.
The roller may be fitted into place readily by pressing the open end of the cap inwardly until it clears the passageway l5 in the roller, and to facilitate such assembly the cap is slit longitudil0 nally for part of its length and inwardly from the end thereof, as shown at 20. Thenormal resiliency in the metal of which the cap is made causes it to assume a close-fitting engagement with the roller while still allowing the free rotation'of it with reference to the cap. Thus, in use, the pencil or pen upon which the cap is placedmay be used as a handle for rolling the wheel across the face of a check. The protector is one which may be conveniently carried by everyone, and which may be effectively used for accomplishing itsjintended purpose.
I claim: p A two-piece check protecting device, consisting of a cap of springy sheet material closed at one end and open at the other, having a substantially cylindrical Wall, a slot formed in the wall and leading from the open end for a considerable distance but terminating short of the closed end, an outward bead formed at the outer end, a parallel intermediate bead intersecting the slot and composed of an outwardly bowed portion of the material of the cap U-shaped in cross-section, and an abrading roller rotatably surrounding the cap between the beads.
