To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN D. PARsoNs, of Yonkers, in the county of Westchester, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Machines; and I do hereby declare vthat the following is a full, clear,- and exact description thereof,

which will enable others skilled in the art to makeand usethe same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.

This invention relates to an improved machine for brushing the brims of hats, for the purpose of clearing or purifying them of dirt and stiliening-inaterial which are left upon the surface of, or are eontainedin tlie brim of the hat after the same has been pouncedJ The invention consists in the arrangement of devices for performing the process of what is known as brushing the brim, while the hat is revolving in any suitably-constructed machine, as I willpro'ceed-to describe.

The accompanying drawing represents a machine for that purpose, which consists of a revolving mandrel, a, vupon which is the pulley b, for the belt c, by means of which it is revolved.

al is a shaft, which has only a longitudinal motion.

These shafts or mandrels a and d are supported by the stands c, on any suitable bench or table.

fis a head or cap, on the end of the mandrel a, and

g is a headjor cap, which revolves on the end of the shaft of mandrel d.

k' is a treadle, attached to the lever at l, by the cord m.

By bearing on the treadle, on the lower end 1t, the lever will be depressed, `While the other end, o, being attached to the shaft d, willthrow that shaft longi tudinally towards vthe head f.

The hat is seen in red color, and is' placed on one of the heads, as seen in the drawing.

Now, by bearing with the foot on the treadle, the shaft d will be thrown forward, and the crown of the hat will 'be confined between the two heads, and revolving with any desired velocity.

The hat is held between theheads while revolving sufficiently fast to-allow the brushes to be applied to both sides of the brim, while the ilustand otherv impurities or substances which are loosened 'by the brushes are thrown off clear from the hat by centlifuy gal force; thus not' only performing this work much more perfectly, but-much more expeditiously than has ever been done before.

Having .thus described my invention,

I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The descl'ibedgarrangement Aupon the frame, and

with relation to each other, of the revolving mandrel and cap a j; and the lsliding shaft d, carrying the re volving cap g, all operating as set forth, to hold and revolve a hat in such a manner as to leave both sides vofjts brim exposed above the frame and operatingmechanislm for brushing and cleansing, as herein described ad shown.
