SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 511,? 12, dated December 26, 1893.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, THOMAS RYLAND, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Brixton, in the county of Surrey, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machinery for Carving or Engraving Vood and other Materials, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts whereby a very simple, effective and easily driven carving or engraving machine is prodnced.
In carrying the invention into effect I employ as heretofore a stationary table on which the pattern and the block or blocks to be carved or engraved are fixed in combination with a movable tracing pointer and one or more rotating carving or engraving tools.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is an end view, Fig. 2 a front view, Fig. 3 a back view and Fig. at a plan of the improved machine. Fig. 5 is a front view and Fig. 6 a sectional end view of parts for carrying and guiding the tracer and cutter frame in a direction parallel with the front of the machine. Fig. 7 is a side view and Fig. 8 a sectional front view of parts for carrying and guiding the parts shown at Figs. 5 and 6 in a direction at right angles to the front and Fig. 9 is a cross section showing one of the carving or engraving tools and the parts for carrying and rotating the same.

I mount the tracing pointerfand the rotating carving or engraving tools g on the front member h of a frame h extending over the machine bed 1). Near the rear end this frame It is provided with guides, preferably rollers 7L2, mounted on a hard parallel with the front of machine so as to enable the tool frame h to be moved in a direction parallel with front of machine. This bar z'is mounted at its ends in bearings j carried at the ends of a cross bar or frame j provided with wheels 7' mounted on guides b fixed in the machine bed at right angles to the front of the machine so as to permit the said cross bar or framej to be moved toward and from the front and back of the machine bed. The guides Z) are preferably, as shown of form and the wheelsj are made to fit the same; the bar 2' although shown of circular section may also be of form, but if desired other descriptions of guides may be employed for these parts. By these means the tool frame is capable of being moved so as to bring the tracerfover every part of the pattern while the tool frame h can be oscillated on the bar '5 thereby enabling the front member h thereof to be raised and lowered as may be required from and to the work and pattern whereby the tracing pointer f and cutter or cutters g are enabled to work as shallow or as deep as may be required. The back member h of the tool frame h is in the form of a shaft on which are freely mounted one or more pairs of guide pulleys for the cutter driving band or hands Z.
In guide slots m formed in adjustable brackets m at the lower parts of the standards a is mounted a counter shaft n on which are loosely mounted one'or more pairs of guide pulleys 0 and said counter shaft 9?. is weighted or acted upon by springs 02 to give it a normally downward tendency or it may be otherwise mounted to produce a like effect. The spindle o is fitted with a long drum 0. A driving band 1, for each carving or engraving tool g, is passed partly around the drum 0', then partly aroundthe guide pulleys k 0 and partly around the driving pulley g of the carving or engraving tool. The guide pulleys 70 0 are capable of sliding freely along their carrying shafts 7L3, n, and the cutter driving band or bands Z is or are capable of traveling along the drum 0. By the above construction and arrangement of parts the tracing point f and the carving or engraving cutter or cutters g are capable of being moved in any direction over the pattern and work without in any way affecting the driving of the cutter or cutters g. Each cutter g is removably fixed in a chuck spindle g on which the pulley g is fixed and such spindle g is mounted in bearings g carried by a plate g which is adj ustably fixed to the front member h of the cutter frame by a screwed stud q and fly nut By these means the cutter or cutters maybe swiveled around the stud g and fixed either in a vertical direction or in inclined directions with the cutting end pointing to either side as may be required for undercutting and if desired the cutter carriers may be coupled together so that they shall move in unison around their studs The front member h of the cutter frame is also provided with trunnions 7L mounted in I hearings in the front ends of the side memsequent upon the arrangements before described capable of being freely moved about in any direction and may be entirely removed from the other parts of the machine as may be required.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a carving or engraving machine the combination of a driving spindle, a longdrum on said spindle a counter shaft liaviuga normally downward tendency, band pulleys mounted freely on said counter shaft a cutter frame mounted on a guide parallel with the machine front and carried by a frame mounted on guides at right angles to the machine front, band guiding pulleys mounted loosely on a shaft forming part of the cutter frame, a tracing pointer and rotary cutter orcutters mounted on the front of the cutter frame and cutter driving bands passing partly around the cutter pulleys, guide pulleys on the cutter frame, guide pulleys on the counter shaft and partly around the long drum substantially as herein shown and described.
2. In a carving or engraving machine the combination with suitable driving means of a cutter frame mounted on guides carried by the bed of the machine and capable of freely moving in any direction over the said bed, and a fixed tracerand rotary cutter or cutters carried by the cutter frame substantially as herein shown and described.
