Description
PATE T OFFICE. 1 I
FREDERICK F. CAMPBELL, OF NEWARK, NEYV JERSEY.
HAT-PQUNCING MACHINE}- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,715, dated February 19, 1884.
Application filed November 26, 1883. (No model.)
full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this specification.
The obj ect of this invention is to provide a hatpouncing machine simple in construction, effective in operation, upon or by which a hat can be pounced entirely, both the rim and crown, and also to effect what is known as a reversed nap,- formed by pouncing the hat one way, and then pouncing it in the opposite way, or against the nap, by the same operator, without necessitating a transfer to a second workman, thus greatly improving the quality and increasing the rapidity of the work.
The invention consists in the operation, construction, and arrangement of the several parts, as will be hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of amachine illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing a modification of form and arrangement of the treadle-bars, 850. and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectionof one of the supportingblocks in Fig. 1.
In carrying out myinvention I employ two separate and independent shafts, A,driven by pulleys A, and working in suitable bearings, O 0, having secured to the inner ends thereof pouncing-blocks B B, either cylindrical or conical, placed at a suitable distance apart, so as to allow working-space, and still be within the reach of the operator.
G are arms or levers, preferably curved as shown in Fig. 1, so as to permit the hat to be passed over the blocks 11, and pivoted to the frame of the machine at a, Fig. 1. To one end of said curved levers are attached the automatically-adj ustable supporting-blocks b, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, said blocks 6 being arranged to press or support the hat against the revolving pouncing-blocks.
In order to regulate the pressure of said ployed on the same lot of hats.
blocksb and allow them to accommodate themselves to the varying thickness of the hatbodies, I provide either a rubber covering for the block b or place elastic pieces 0, either rubber or springs being adapted for the pur pose, between said block and the arm 0, as shown in Fig. 1. Bolts d pass through the elastic pieces and the arm 0, and are secured on the under side thereof by thumb-screws, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The preferred form for securing an elastic or accommodating supporting-block is shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The other ends of the arms or levers G are provided with slotsf, and connected by the link or connecting-piece 9, having bolts or pins working in said slots.
h is the bar connecting the link 9 with the treadle z.
A-spring, j, may be used to assist the fall ing of the curved levers and blocks b away from the pouncing-blocks, as indicated in'Fig.
1,'being secured to the link 9 and guide Z, through. which the bar h passes.
In operating the machine the hat is first pounced on one block, as B, and then the nap reversed on the block B,both blocks and shafts revolving in the same direction. By this method the whole hat is pounced by one operator, thus securing better and more uniform results than if different workmen were en1- Moreover, when several dozen hats are pounced but one way, and stacked one upon the other before the nap is reversed by another pouncing, t'he fine nap remaining on the hats is flattened or smoothed down,so that when the hat is pounced again as fine a finish is not secured as when the pounoing is completed before it leaves the hand of the operator. The pouncing-blocks may be covered with sand-paper in the usual manner.
Instead of two shafts, separate and independent, the pouncing-cones may placed on a single shaft running betweeffitlm cones, as dotted on Figs. 1 and 2, the truncatdpart of the cones being placed more nearly adjacent between the bearings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A hatpouncing machine provided with pouncing-blockshaving the shape of truncated cones placed between bearings with the truncated portion more nearly adjacent.
2. The combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, of pouncing-blocks B B, arranged 011 a shaft or shafts between bearings, as O O.
3. A hat-pouncing machine provided with two independent 'shafts, each of which has attached thereto a pouneing-block.
4. In a hat-pouncing machine provided with two independent shafts, the combination of the shafts A, pouncing-blocks B B, and mech anism adapted to press the hatbodies against said blocks.
5. In combination, in a 11at-pouncing machine, the shafts A, pouncing-blocks B B, and curved arms 0, all substantially as set forth.
6. In combination, in a hatpouncing ma chine, the shafts A, pouncing-blocks B B, and curved levers 0, having secured thereto supporting-blocks Z).
7. In combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, the shafts A, pouneing-blocks B B, and levers having secured thereto automaticallyadjustable supporting-blocks.
8. I11 a hat-pouneing machine, an automatically-adjustable supporting-block capable of accommodating itself to the varying thickness of the hat-bodies.
9. In combination, in a hat-pouncing niachinc, a pouncing-block, B, and an automatically-adjustable supporting-block adapted to press the hat-bodies against said block.
10. The combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, with a block, b, and an arm, 0, of means adapted to secure an elastic support, all sub stantially as set forth.
11. In combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, a block, I), arm 0, and an elastic backing, 0.
12. In combination, in a hat-pouncing ma chine, a block, b, arm 0, elastic pieces 0, and means whereby the amount of elasticity may be increased or diminished.
13. In combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, ablock, 1), arm 0, elastic pieces 0, and bolts d.
14. In combination, in a hat-pouncing machine, the shaft A, poui'lcing-blocks B B, and curved levers 0, having attached to one end an elastic supporting-block, the other end being provided with a slot, f.
15. In combination, the shaft A, pouncingblocks B B, curved levers 0, having attached to one end supporting-blocks I), the other end being provided with slots 1", and a connectingpiece or .link, 7.
v 16. In combination, the shaft A, pouncingblocks B B, curved levers 0, having attached to one end a supporting-block, b, the other end provided with a slot, j", a link, g, having pins working in said slots, and mechanism whereby said curved levers and link may be raised.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 23d day of November, 1883.
FREDERICK F. CAMPBELL.
