Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, FREDERICK BEoKEn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms, and do declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in brooms, and the improvement consists in a separable construction, substantially as herein shown and described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.

My object is to provide a clamping holder for the brush part of the broom which will permit the substitution of a new brush when the old is worn out or is to be replaced for any reason. The holder is purposely constructed to have long life and may be used indefinitely. The brush is also formed clifferently than formerly and its cost is cheapened both to the maker and the user, thereby providing an article which in the end will prove itself to be not only useful but also economical to all.

In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a cross section of the broom holder taken on line l1, Fig. 4:. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the broom and holder, and Fig. 3 a sectional View on the line of the handle. Fig. 4 is a face view of the broom and holder, with the handle broken away as in the other views.

The elementary parts of the. invention consists of broom or brush 2, holder 3 for said brush, and a handle 4 for said holder. Taking them in the order named, brush 2 is very similar in shape to the ordinary broom, excepting its upper portion which is wide and flat and provides a rectangular shaped neck 5 instead of a rounded stub as usually made and wrapped about a stick or handle. However, brush 2 is sewn or stitched as usual across its face, and although not shown, suchstitching may also occur across the face of neck 5 if desired;

Broom or brush 2 as thus made, becomes a separate article of manufacture and sale, and is especially adapted for use with a holder 3 such as I provide for removably open side, and within which, neck 5 of brush 2 is adapted to be inserted and confined. This holder may be either cast or pressed into shape by any well known mechanical method and is preferably as light as its service will warrant. Then to effect locking of the brush within holder 3, both casing 6 and door 7 have inturned cross ribs 8 at their bottom which compress neck 5 between them and tightly clamp and hold the brush from pulling out when thumb nut-s and screws 9 engaged with ears 10 on both the casing and cover, are screwed up. Ribs or flanges 8 on cover 7 also extend vertically within the sides of the casing to guide and hold the cover in place. A rivet 11 projecting downward from the top of casing 6 passes through an opening in an ear or flange 12 on the cover and holds the latter suspended for swinging movement, see dotted lines, Fig. 8. Any other equivalent pivotal or swinging support may be employed instead.

Handle 4 is pinnedor otherwise secured in socket l3 integral with casing 6 at its top, and said casing is preferably rounded as at 14. Other means than thumb nut 9 may be used to look the parts together, and the location thereof may be other than at the sides.

What I claim is A broom holder consisting of two parts comprising a main side part provided with a socket for a handle and a hole in the bottom of said socket, an auxiliary side part having an ear provided with a hole registering with said hole in said socket, a headed pin through said holes connecting said parts, and said parts having corresponding ears at their side edges and screws through said ears to clamp said parts on the brush, said side parts having engaging ribs inside along their lower edges.
