Description

T. D. MEYER. ADJUSTABLE HINGE AND BRACE. APPLICATION FILED JULY 27, 1907.
Patented July 20, 1909.
awvenlfoz UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TILMAN D. MEYER, OF BREWSTER, MINNESOTA.
ADJUSTABLE HINGE AND BRACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TILMAN D. MEYER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brewster, in the county of Nobles, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Hinges and Braces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to adjustable hinges and braces and has for its object to provide a device of this class which will elfectually prevent sagging of a door to which it is applied and which may be manipulated to take up any sag which may occur after it has been applied to the door.
One of the objects of theinvention is to provide an extremely simple device of this character and one which can be manufactured at a small cost and a further object of the invention is to provide a device of this type having a simple and novel adjusting means.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a door showing the application of the preferred form of the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a modification thereof. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing a second modification thereof.
My invention comprises a hinge leaf which is indicated by the numeral 31 and is secured to the door by means of bolts 32 which are passed through slots 33 formed in the said hinge leaf, the said hinge leaf being provided at its inner end with the usual knuckle 34. for engagement over the end of a lag screw 35 of the construction usually employed. The leaf is turned to extend downwardly at an angle as is clearly shown in the drawings, and at its lower end is offset as at 36 and perforated as at 37 for the engagement therethrough of the door supporting member proper. This door supporting member comprises, in Fig. 1, a pair of bars 24: and 25 provided with screw threaded ends 26 connected by a turn buckle 27. The ends of the bars 24 and 25 are bent Specification of Letters Patent.

at right angles as indicated at 38 and the end of the bar 25 is held in the perforation 37 while the end of the bar 24 is held in a bracket 12.
In the form shown in Fig. 2 a rod 28 is used and the bracket is provided with perforations in the offset portion through which said rod passes, it being adjusted by means of a nut 29.
In the form shown in Fig. 3 the rod 28 is fixed upon the door and the threaded end passed through a portion 39 of the hinge leaf which is folded outward for this purpose.
By providing the hinge leaf 31 with slots 33 through which the fastening bolts 32 pass into the door, it is not necessary to remove the bolts and disconnect the hinge leaf from the door when the tension member is to be tightened up. The slots extend in the same direction as the hinge leaf and the tension member, so that when the latter is tightened up and the door is drawn back to its proper position, the bolts travel along the slots.
What is claimed, is-
1. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door and its frame, of a hinge leaf hingedly connected with one stile of the frame, the said leaf being formed with slots, bolts passed through the slots, and the door, a brace element connected to the hinge leaf and to the door, and means to vary the length of said brace element.
2. In a device of the kind described, the combination with a door and its frame, of a leaf hinged to the frame, said leaf extending obliquely over the door and having longitudinal slots, fastening means passing through the slots into the door, a brace member connected to the hinge leaf and to the door and extending across the door at the same angle as the hinge leaf, and means to vary the length of said brace element.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
TILMAN D. MEYER.
