S. 'M. SEVERSON STORM WINDOW HOLDER Filed Marh 1923 Patented Nov. 3, 1925.
IT'LED STATES sEvERr snvnnson, or ALBERT .LEafr/rrNNEsorrn.
sm'omvr-wrnnow Herman.
re airman-area March 6,1923. Serial No. 623,131.
To all whom itmay-oovwernr Be 'it "known that I, Snvnn'r M. S'nvERsoN, a citizen of the 'Un'ited States, residing at Albertlremin the county of Freebormlstat'e of Minnesota, have invented a new and usean Storm-WVindow'Holder; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact-description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the artto which it appertains to make and use the same.
uThe invention rel-ates to storm window holders and has forits object to providea device of this character comprising an outwardly m'ovablearm "formed from a plurality of pivotally connected members and disposed between the storm window and the lower sash and forming means whereby the storm window may be held either closed or in various open positions. The pivotally connecting members form means whereby said members may be disposed at a right angle to each other between the storm window and the lower sash, consequently allowing large range of adjustability.
A further object is to provide a U-shaped bracket secured to the upper side of the window sill, said bracket being provided with a clamping jaw for clamping and holding the pivoted sections after they have been adjusted to the desired position. Also to provide the inner pivoted member with a right angled portion at its end, which right angled portion forms means for preventing the inner pivoted member from passing outwardly from engagement with the bracket and pivoted member.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawing, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit o'f'the invention.
In the drawing 2- Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view through a window frame and sash, showing the device disposed between the sash and storm window.
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the deaijiortionof the U -shaped bracket.
i j Refe-rrin'g to the drawing, the numeral l designates, a conventional form at window frame, '2 the "lower sash thereof and '3 the -storm window. The storm window 3 is hingedly connected -'at- 4 to the w-in'dow frame 1 and is adapted to be moved 'outward ly'in thedirection of the arrow a to various positions, and held in said. positions "by the 7 windowholding'device 5. "lhewindow holding "device '5 is adapted to be adjusted in such -a manner that the storm window 3 may be locked in closed iposrt-ionouat vari- "ous -o pen positions, for instance, for -veniti-,
la-ting par-poses. Secured *tot he upper side of the window sill 6 "is a ll sh'a'ped "bracket 7, fwh ieh "bracket is provided with a ho'rizontally disposed portion 8, on which any of the pivoted sections 9, 10 or 11 of the storm window holding arm may be clamped and held by the hinged jaw 12, which is hingedly connected at 13 to the U-shaped member 7. Extending through the horizontally disposed portion 8 of the U-shaped bracket and the hinged jaw 12 is a bolt 14, which bolt is provided with a thumb screw 15, whereby the hinged jaw 12 may be forced into close and binding engagement with one of the sections 9, 10 or 11 for holding the storm window 3 in adjusted position. The section 9 is pivotally connected at 16 to a bracket 17 carried by the storm window and it will be seen that by pivotally connecting the sections 9, 1O
and 11 that the sections disposed rearwardly' of the bracket 7 may be positioned between the storm windowv and the lower sash 2 where they will not interfere with the operation of the lower sash 2 as clearly shown in Figure 1. It will also be seen that when the sections 10 or 11 are disposed in position to the inner side of the brackets 7, that said I posed portion 8 and the pivoted jaw 2, consequently preventing the storm window from being forced open. The end 18 of the piv-' oted member 11 is. provided with a right angularly disposed portion 19, which por tion prevents the section 11 from passing entirely through the clamping means, and consequently prevents the storm window from moving to extreme open position with the bar out'of engagement with the clamping means. Interposed between the hinged jaw 12 andf'the-horizontall'y disposed por tion 8 is a coiled spring'20, which spring, when the "thumb nut 15, is loosened forces moved and is constructed in such mannerthat it is entirely disposed between the storm window and an adjacent window sash, there by not interfering with the operation of the window sash;
V Theinvention having been set forth What is claimed as new and useful is:
The combination with a hinged storm window, said window being carried by a window frame, asash slidably mounted in the window frame, of an adjusting and holding device for said storm window and entirely disposed between the storm window and the window sash, said adjusting and holding device comprising an arm pivotally connected to the storm window, said arm being formed from a plurality of pivotally connected sections foldable into registration with each other, and a clamping device carried by the window sill between the sash and storm window and cooperating with all of said plurality of pivotally connected sections, said clamping member comprising a U-shaped bracket, said bracket having its transverse portion downwardly offset, thereby forming shoulders between which the pivoted sections of the arm extend, a clamping jaw carried by one of said shoulders and pivotally connected thereto, and a set screw extending through said jaw and the transverse portion of the bracket for securely clamping the arm between the jaw and bracket and the shoulders carried b the bracket.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
SEVERTv M. SEVERSON.
