My invention relates to a sliding gate, s o arranged that a person in a vehicle or on vhorseback can open and close it without dismounting.

The accompanying drawing represents t-he gate open.

A represents the latch-post of the gate, which is connected with the post B by means ofthe .tracks O C.

D isthe gate, wl1icl1,when open, as shown inthe drawing, runs through the post B, in between the guard-rails E.

The foot of the vgate is provided with the flanged rollers a a, which run on the tracks C C, and the shoulder ofthe gate is provided with the flanged rollers b b, which run over the upperl guard-rail-E. Y

The top rail of the gate is made to extend some distance beyond the back of the same, to admit of the hackendof the gate passing in between the sides of thepost B, and is provided at both endswith the pulleys c and c', placed flat upon its top.

The cap G of the post B is provided, at its corners, withthe pulley-wheels dgdz, d?, and d H and H represent the operating-posts. These posts are placed on each side of the gate, at a proper 'distance therefrom, and are provided, at their top,

with the pulleys el, c2, e?, and e4, placed perpendicular] y therein. v I

q and h represent the operating-ropes or chains, and o their knobs.

The operating-chain g (by means'ot' which the gate is opened) runs o'ver the pulley el, in the operatingpost H, andaronnd the inside of the pulley-wheel d1, in the cap G, thence forward and around the pulley c, onv the front end of the top rail of the gate, thence back and around the pulley-wheel d in the cap G, and thence on and over the pulley e3,in the operating-post H.

The operating-chain It (by means of which thegate is closed) runsover the pulley e2, inthe .operating-post H, and around the pulley-wheel d2, in the cap G, thence backward and around thel pulley c', on the back end of the top rail of the gate, thence forward and around the pulley-wheel cF, in the cap G, and thence on and over the pulley e4, in the operating-post H.

The front ends of the guard-rails E are attached to` and supported by the post B, and their back ends by the posts M M. f

The operating-chains g and h may be enclosed in a box, if desired.

IThe lower ends of the sides'of the latch-post A are recessed, as 'shownl at m, to admit thevilanged rollers a, a, on the foot of. the gate, passing in between the sides of said post.

The gate is operated as follows:

`A person desiring to open the gate, on driving up to it pulls the opening-chain g, which, by means ofthe pulley-wheel l1 or d", (according to thel side from whence the gate is opened,) in the cap G, and the `pulley c, on the front endof the top rail ofthe' gate, opens the gate by sliding it back between the guard-rails lE.

On drivingthrongh the gate-way, the gate is closed by pulling the closing-chain h, which, operating on the pulley-wheels d2 or d4, and the pulley c', in the same manner that theopening-chain g does on the pulleywheels d1. or rl, and pulley c, slides the gate out again, thereby closing it.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure 4. The arrangement of the operating-chains lg and-- h, as herein shown, and for the purpose described.
