TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 13, 1909.
Application filed September 21, 1908. Serial No. 454,052.
To all "whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER S. MENDEN- HALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in a temporary binder, the object being to secure a simple, cheap and efficient lock between the cover portions.
The features of the invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved binder. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, with sheets omitted. Fig. 3 is an enlargerjl section through the telescoping sleeve and pin. Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the same. Fig. 5 is a detailed view of the pins. Fig. 6 is a central vertical section, through top cover, of a modified form. Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the same. Fig. 8 is a detailed bottom plan view of cover plate with pin omitted.
1 represents the top cover, having the depending pins 2.
3 is the bottom cover, having the sleeve binding-posts or tubes i. The pins telescope into the tubes and the pins and tubes are each provided with interlocking peripheral surfaces, which, in the specific form shown, consist of segmental threads 5, 6, respectively. Each pin is provided with a concavity 7, in its periphery adjacent to its threads 6. The concave portions are placed to register vertically with the tube threads 5 for insertion and removal of the pins into the tube, and this formation permits of the free vertical movement of the covers when the pins and tubes are in these relative positions.
Preferably, the external and internal threads or surface indentations are right and left, so that after a free insertion they may be engaged and interlocked by a slight turn of the pin in the proper direction, thus holding the pins with a wedging action against vertical movement, and securing the covers together upon the papers to be bound, of whatever thickness.
The preferred form is shown in the modification, Figs. 6, 7, 8, in which the pins are provided with heads 8, countersunk into the top cover and provided with the cross slot 9, so that they can. be conveniently manipulated by means of a screw driver or a coin.
10 represents the coui'itersunk portion of the cover, provided with the orifice 11, having the segmental notch 12 in its periphery. The pin 2 is provided with a washer l3, having a lug 14, smaller than the notch and lying therein, so as to limit the amount of pin rotation to a movement just sufficient to effect the locking and unlocking.
Having described my invention, I claim In a temporary binder, covers provided with telescoping posts and tubes, each having a series of segmental locking surfaces, one of the telescoping members having a peripheral concavity adjacent its locking surfaces adapted to register with the locking surfaces of the cooperating telescoping member to permit of a telescopic movement, said surfaces being adapted to interlock to hold the post and tube against telescopic movement, and means limiting the rotatable movement of the post in its direction of locking, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WALTER S. MENDENITALL.
