BOOK-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, in the cityand State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book- Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to book looks, and more particularly to looks adapted to be placed over loose-leaf books and the like, in order to prevent the same from being opened, and has for its principalobjects to provide such a lock which shall be effective, easily operated, and which may be adjusted to fit. books of varying thickness.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of various devices, elements and parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings, and hereinafter more particularly described.
In the said drawings, Figure lis an elevation of my invention with a portion broken away to show interior construction; Fig. 2 is a View of the same as it would appear looking from the right of Fig- 1; Fig. 3 is a section taken on the line 33 of Fig. 2 and looking in the direction of the arrows, showing the key in place in the lock; Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the key removed;'Fig.- 5 is a view of a portion of Fig. 2, showing the lockbarrel in another position; Fig. 6 is a sec tion taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1 and looking in the direction of the arrows; and Fig. 7 is a view of the lock barrel and attached screw, removed from the remainder of the device.
In carrying my invention into effect in the embodiment thereof which I have selected for illustration in the accompanying drawings and description in this specification, I provide'a pair of jaw members, slidably connected together so that they may be separated and approximated to receive between the same books of different thicknesses. prises a base portion 10 and a clamping-portion 11 integral therewith extending at approximately right angles thereto, each of said clamping members 11 being provided with an inwardly projecting stud 12, which is adapted to be inserted in a perforation provided therefor near the outer edge of the stood by those skilled in the art.

The base members 10 are adapted to slide one within the other, as shown more particularly in Fig.1, and one of the base membersis providedwith an internally screw threaded, socket 13 adapted to receive a screw threaded projection 14: on the inner end of' the lock barrel 15, forming part of the locking device now to be described. This locking device is of a type already known in the art, and which it is not necessary to describe in detail, as the same and theoperation thereof, will be well under- It consists essentially of said lockbarrel 15,which is provided with an axial slot, which may 7 18, is normally located within the housing 7 19, secured to the inner side of one of the clampingmembers 10, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4; and a small helical spring 20 is also located within said housing, being adapted to bear against the end of the pin 18 and to always tend to force the same toward the serted iniits slot, the pin 17 is lifted by the key andin its turn lifts the pin 18 against the pressure of the helical spring, the length lock barrel. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 3, the key being inof the pin. 17 being adjusted so that when 7 the key is in place it will be flush with the lock barrehbut when the key is removed the spring will force the pins into the position shown in Fig. 4, in which case the pin 18 passes through a perforation in the'lock barrel, forcing the pin 17 into the lock barrel and prevents the same from turning until it is released by the insertion of the key and the forcing outward of the. pin 17.
The operation of my inventionis as follows: I he clamping members 11 being separated to an extent suflicient to allow of the convenient. insertion between them of the loose leaf or other book which it is desired to lock against opening, the studs 12 are brought into register with the corresponding openings in the covers of the book, the key is inserted in the lock, and the barrel with its attached screw 14 is rotated so as to move the two clamping members 11 toward each other, in the construction shown in the drawings this rotation being obviously in a clockwise direction. The clamping members are thereby pressed together upon the book covers to a sufficient degree to hold the same securely, and the key is withdrawn,
. whereupon the pin 18 is forced by the spring 20 into its socket in the lock barrel, thereby preventing the latter from being rotated. To unlock and open the book, the key is inserted in its slot, thereby, disengaging the pin 18 from its socket in the lock barrel and allowing the latter to be rotated in a counter-clockwise direction, which separates the clamping members 11 and releases the book held therebetween. It will be observed that 'the pin 17 performs no locking function,
its only purpose being to disengage the pin 18 fromits socket when the key is inserted as shown in Fig. 3.
- The advantages of invention will be obvious from what has been above said with regard to its construction and mode of operation. Q I do not limit myself to the. exact form of the invention shown in the accompanying 5 drawings'and heremabove descrlbed, as it is bers,-and a locking device, adapted to prevent the operation of said spaclng means or to operate the said spacing means.
2. A book lock comprising a pair of operation of said spacing means or to operate the said spacing means.
3. A book lock comprising a pair of clamping members adapted to receive between them a book or the like and to hold the same against opening, rotatable means adapted to adjustably space the said clamping members, and a locking device adapted to prevent the operation of said spacing means or to operate the said spacing means.

5. The combination with a book or the like, the covers of which are provided with perforations, of a locking device comprising a pair ofclamping members provided with studs adapted to engage with said perforations and to hold said book against opening, means adapted to adjustably space the said clamping members, and locking means adapted to prevent the operation of said spacing means or to operate the said spacing means.
