UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDGAR A. OUSTER, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE CUSTER SAN DLESS'CASTING COMPANY, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
-To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDGAR A. CUsTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful lmprovemcnts in Metal Products from Cast-Iron, of which the following is a specification.
' a My invention has relation to producing from cast iron a metal product adapted to take a temper.
My invention, basically considered, consists of a metal product havin the chemical constituency of cast iron and the physical pro erty of taking a tem or.
The nature and enera scope of my invention will be more ully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part hereof, in Which Figure 1, is a view of a plant susceptible, instrumentally, of being employed to produce the metal product embodying the features of my said invention ,and Fi 2, is a view in perspective, illustrativ'ely, 0 the metal product adapted to take a temper, derived from cast iron according to my invention.
Referring to the drawing 1, represents a cupola -furnace provided with a pouring spout'a, and ladle a, the ladle being placed in roximity to a permanent sectional metal mo (1 2, consisting of a cope b, and drag 1;, having pour-holes b, located about the meeting edge of the two sections of the mold 2, and having internal channelways, not shown, directly leading to a central cavity 1), of any required shape or form, accordin to the shape or form of the homogeneous so id struc ture to be cast in the mold. The molten metal from the cupola-furnace 1, asses by the pouring-spout a, into the lad e a, and then into the mold 2, in whichit swiftly chills Specification 01 Letters patent. Application flled February 26, 1909.

that the cast structure, set in the mold can immediately be removed. It can then be quenched in a tank of water 3, while still hot and give a resultant product having the chemical constituency of cast iron and some I It has a r of the physical properties of steel. also beendemonstrated that the metal prod.-
not, as hereinbefore described, may be sub- 1ected to magnetic influences and retain sufficient magnetism to become, due to the character of the metal, a permanent magnet. Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. As a new article of manufacture, ametal product having the constituency of cast iron and property of taking a temper.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a homogeneous metal product having the constituency of cast iron and property of taking a temper.
3. As a new article of-manufacture, a homogeneous metal product having the chemical constituency of cast iron and physical property oftakiug a temper.
4. As a new article of manufacture, a metal product having the constituency of cast iron and property of becoming, by the character thereof, a permanent magnet.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
