Description

inn-ital Stairs fittest @ihiiw.
Letters Patent No. 92,743, dad July 20, 1869.
IMPROVED IIliIlIlL'Il-"A.'JJION FABRIC OR PAPER CLOTH.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of thesame.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. NEWTON, of H01- yoke, Hampdencounty, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful- Improvement in the Manufacture of Paper-Cloth Material and I do hereby declare that the following is an exact and clear description thereof.
This invention consists of the manufacture of paperclot-h material in a peculiar manner, so as to give it the appearance of linen on one surface or both, as may be required.
I am aware'that there are paper articles, such as collars and'cufi's, in which the appearance of a linen surface is given by stamping; but in my invention, I do not use a paper surface for the imitation, as has heretofore been. the case, but I use a cloth surface, whether of cotton cloth, cambric, or other similar material suitable for the purpose, and give this surface animpression from rolls, or from an actual piece of linen pressed upon it, which said impression is in imitation of linen, thereby obtaining the advantages of a cloth surface, and at the same time an appearance of linen. I
' I do not confine myself, however, to an impression representing linen alone, as other kinds of fabric may be represented in this way to advantage.
The operation of this is as follows:
' The paper-cloth material, composed of paper with a cheap cambric or other suitable cloth surface, is first sized over with a mixture of starch orother substances,
forming what is kilown as laundry polish, or an enamelled surface. It is then passed through the stamping-rolls, which gives the cloth surface an impression imitating fine linen.
Instead of the rolls, I- sometimes use a piece of real linen, which is pressed down upon the cloth surface, giving the desired linen appearance.
It is not absolutely necessary to the success of my invention that an enamel should be used over the cloth surface, as when the material is first made, the cloth is sufficiently soft and pliable to receive -the impression of the stamping-rolls, and even afterwards can be made so by wetting.
By this means, I obtain a peculiarly neat imitation of fine linen, obtaining an actual cloth surface at the same time.
This is very advantageous in articles of wearing.- apparel made of paper material with cloth surfaces.
Now, having described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire-to secure by Let ters Patent, is
As\a new article of manufacture, a paper-cloth ma- I terial, .in which the clotlrsurface is stamped in imitation oflinen or other woven material, substantially in the manner herein described.
JAMES H. NEWTON.
