RECOIL-PAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented .Tune 29, 1909.
Application filed May 27, 1908. Serial No. 435,205.
To all whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. WnssoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Recoil-Pads, of which the following is a clear, full, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improvement for revolvers and similar hand-supported Weapons consisting of a recoil pad, and in the specification and claim I employ the term revolver in its broadest sense as applying to any hand-supported fire-arm.
The object oi' my invention is an attachment for relieving the hand or at least that portion of the hand between the thumb and fore-iinger from the disagreeable eiects of the shock and recoil due to the iring of high charge and large caliber cartridges.
My invention will be defined in the claim.
Figure l is a portion of a revolver frame showing my recoil pad attached thereto; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of detached recoil pad.
Fig. I shows the frame of an ordinary revolver in which l designates the main body portion, and 2 the stock portion thereof. Although the stock and body portion are usually constructed in one piece to form a revolver frame, I use the term juncture of said stock and body portion of the frame, and by this I mean merely the corner 6 which usually marks the end of the portion of the stock which is grasped by the hand.
3 is my recoil pad and is composed of any suitable resilient material, such as rubber and the like. In the present embodiment this is secured by any suitable means such as cement or glue to a metallic base plato 5 which is slightly concave in shape throughout its length for iitting over the rear side of the stock. Said base plate is provided with forwardly extending ears 4 adapted to embrace the sides of the frame adjacent to the juncture 6 between the body portion l of the frame and the stock 2. In the present form I have perforated the ears 4 for the purpose of receiving suitable screws for attaching them to the frame, but it is understood that this is only a preferred form and that other means may be equally well employed to secure the ears to the frame.
What I claim is:
In combination with a revolver frame having a suitable stock, of a substantially Aflat pad of resilient material carried on a metal base plate and adapted to rest beneath the hand in grasping the stock, said base plate having a concave longitudinal portion adapted to t the rear side of said stock adjacent to its juncture with the main body portion of said frame, attaching ears extending forwardly from each side edge of said longitudinal portion for embracing the sides of said revolver frame, said ears being perforated to receive attaching screws for securing the same to said revolver frame.
Signed at Springlield this 20 day ot' May i908.
JOSEPH H. WESSON.
