ATTACHMENT FOR PISTOLS.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES AUBREY GARTH hLinsHALL, subject of the King of England, residing at London, in England, have invented a certain new and useful Attachment for Pistols, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object the provision of an improved rest or support for use with fire-arms such as revolvers, pistols and the like for the purpose of steadying the hand of the firer.

The invention is intended more particularly for use in practice but it is also useful under service conditions.

According to this invention the revolver or the like is provided with an attachment adapted to support the fore arm or wrist of the firer when holding the revolver in the firing position the device being either fixed to or detachable from the butt of the weapon. In one convenient construction the rest is in two parts one adapted to be attached to the butt of the revolver and the other hinged to it in such a manner that itcan be opened out into an approximately horizontal position to act as a wrist sup port or rest for the firers fore arm or when not in use can be folded up so as to lie along the back surface of the butt. This hinged member is preferably provided with a plate. a curved bar or the like so that it fits and forms a comfortable rest for the fore-arm or wrist.

In the accompanying drawings which illustrate one construction of wrist support or fore arm rest according to this invention, Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the butt of a revolver with the rest in the position which it occupies when ready for use. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 1 but showing the rest folded against the butt, and Fig. 4 is a rear view of the revolver with the rest in the position shown in Fig. 3. Figs. 5 to 8 illusstrate modifications.

To the butt A of the revolver a plate B is attached in any convenient manner say by screws B entering the base of the butt. To the plate B is hinged an arm C carrying at its free' end a curved plate D. The hinge is so made that the arm C can be turned into the approximately horizontal position indicated in Figs. 1 and 2 where its further Specification of Letters Patent.

movement is stopped and it becomes a rigid member forming a support or rest for the wrist or fore-arm when in the firing position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1. It will be noticed that the arm C is skewed or set off so that the curved plat-e D lies at the proper angle to fit the fore-arm when the pistol is held ready for firing. This skewing is brought about by an appropriate setting of the hinge relatively to the center line of the plate B. When not in use the arm C can be turned up on its hinge to occupy the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4: where it will be seen that the curved plat-e D fits around the upper part of the butt so that the arm C lies snugly against the back part of the butt and takes up very little room. As the plate 0 can be quite thin it is possible, when the rest is in its folded position, to grip the butt and the rest and use the revolver in the ordinary way as if the rest were not present.

Various alterations in the design and construction of the rest may be made without departing from the spirit of this invention, for instance the plate B may be made so as to be readily detachable from the butt instead of being fixed thereto more or less permanently. An example of such a construction as shown in Fig. 5 in which the plate B is provided with side lugs Z) which turn up over the sides of the bottom part of the butt and are provided with holes so that a pin 6 can be passed through them and through corresponding holes made in the butt to retain the plate in place. When the fore arm rest is detachable from the butt it may be made without the hinge as shown in Fig. 6 if such a construction be desired. Again as shown in Fig. 7 the arm C may be made in two parts sliding one over the other or telescopically so that the distance between the curved plate D and the butt of the revolver may be varied to suit the requirements of different individuals.

Instead of the curved plate D any other convenient support or pad may be employed and in some cases a strap adapted to encircle the wrist of the firer may be attached to the end of the arm C as shown in Fig. 8.

From the foregoing description, it will be seen that the present invention relates solely to a pistol or fire arm which is fired while being supported by the hand independent of any support from the shoulder or side of the body, the rest or support cooperating with the wrist or fore arm of the firer. That is, the invention does not provide an attachment for a revolver or pistol by which such weapon is adapted to be handled and supported while being fired in the manner of a gun.

hat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a pistol, the combination with the butt, of a member attached thereto, an arm hinged to such member, and a rest mounted on said arm and adapted to supportthe wristor forearm of the users hand when properly grasping the pistol to fire it.

2. In a pistol the combination with the butt, of a plate attached thereto, an arm hinged to such plate and skewed or set off for the purpose described, and a rest mounted on said arm and adapted to support the wrist or fore-arm of the firer, substantially as set forth.

3. An attachment for a pistol comprising an arm provided at one end with means for attachment to a pistol butt and having at its other end a substantially horizontal member extending on opposite sides of the arm and adapted to serve as a support for the wrist or forearm of a person properly grasping the pistol to fire it.

6. An attachment for a pistol comprising 7 an arm and means for securing it to the butt of a pistol and permitting it to extend rearwardly from the pistol in position to support the wrist or forearm of the firer or to fold upwardly against the rear face of the pistol butt.
