RAILWAY-TIE specification of Letters Patent.-
Application led December 14, 1908.
Patented June 291909.
serial No. 467,403.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RIQHARD I-Iow, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Medaryville, in the county of Pulaski and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and usef-ul Improvements in Railway-Ties; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same. y
My invention relates to railway ties, and
particularly to that type which are con` scribed and particularly pointed outin the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the tie showing the rails in section thereon; Fig. 2 is a top plan view; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary longitudinal section on line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a transverse sectionon the line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a horizontal section on line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
Referring more -especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the two halves of a tie. These halves are both alike and are provided at their. inner ends with bushed apertures 3 through which the clamping bolts 4 are adapted to pass so as to secure the members together by means of the clamping plates 5.
Each tie is preferably pyramid-shaped in cross section and has embedded in its surface a plurality of reinforcing L-irons 6.
At each end of the tie i. e., at the outside end of each member, I provide a rubber or other flexible cushion 7 and mount thereupon the wooden block 8. The cushion 7 and the block 8 are both preferably made with a half notch 9 on the outside of each piece so as to receive the locking rib 10 which is made integral with the inner side of the clips 11. These clips overlap the rail 12 and are secured tothe tie by means of bolts 13 which pass through the clips and through bushed openings 14 vin the tie.
By the above construction of cushion blocks I am enabled to replace them at any time without raising the tie to remove the bolts, or without any considerable trouble, as is the case in some instances. A slight pressure under the center will raise the blocks free of the ribs so that they may be 4easily removed. When in place, the bolts effectually prevent any sliding or slipping of the parts and therail is always insured a firm and resilient base or support.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying. drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation. l
Various changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:` l
1. In a device of the class described, a body, a pair of cushioning members seated on said body, said cushioning members being of different resiliency and having a notch on each side thereof, rail securing means adapted to hold a rail upon said cushioning members, and means formed on said rail securing means adapted to engage the notches of said members to prevent their displacement.
2. In a device of the class described, a body, a cushioning member seated on said body, and having notches in its sides, a second cushioning member mounted upon the first member and having notches registering with the notches in the rst cushioning member, said second cushioning member having less resiliency than the first mentioned cushmy hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witoning member, rail securing means adapted nesses. Y to hold a rail upon said cushionine members and lugs on said securing means fdr engagin 'RICHARD HOW' 5 the notches of said cushioning members to Witnesses:
JAMES R. LINToN, Enns W. HORNER.
hold them from displacement.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set
