ELBERT W. SMITH, OF HORSE SHOE, NORTH CAROLINA, ASSlGNOlt Ol" ONlC-llAl/lf l`O lYlL- LIAM C. JORDAN, OF HENDERSONVILLE, NORTH CAltOLlNA.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBERT WV. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horse Shoe, in the county of Henderson and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire- Plugs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had tothe accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in lire plugs and consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple and practical in construction and strong and durable in use.
The above and other objects of the invention are attained in its preferred embodiment illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the improved lire plug showing its cover in its open position in full lines and in its closed position in dotted lines; Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the plane indicated by the line 2-2in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the body portion of the box or casing of the plug; Fig. 4L is a detail horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 1 -1 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the rotary plug or cock.
The invention comprises a stand pipe or plug 1 having its lower end suitably secured in the ground and connected to the water supply pipe and its upper end projecting through an opening in the bottom of a box or casing 2 preferably of rectangular form provided with a hinged cover 3. Said upper portion of the plug 1 is cylindrical in form and has at opposite points recesses or seats l to receive parallel cross bars 5 arranged upon the bottom of the body of the box or casing 2 so as to effectively unite the plug and casing. The cover 3 is pivoted or hinged by means of pivots 6 arranged in bearing brackets 7 secured to the side walls of the box adjacent to its rear wall, so that said cover can swing rearwardly, as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. The cover has a gablcd top or roof 8 so as to dir'ect water, snow and the like off of it and to provide sufficient space in its top to receive the upper part of the lire plug. Any suitable means may be Specification of Letters Patent.

provided for retaining the cover in its closed position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 but, as illustrated, it carries a hook-shaped tongue t) adapted to enter a suitable lock casing 10 arranged upon the inner face of the front wall of the body box or casing, the lock being controlled by a suitable key adapted to be inserted in key hole l1 shown in Fig. l.
Two leaf springs 12 are disposed vertically and have their lower ends secured at 13 to the inner face of the rear wall of the body of the box or casing and their free upper ends curved and adapted to engage the inner face and edge of the rear wall of the cover, whereby said cover will be automatically actuated from its closed position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1 to a partially open position when the lock is opened. After the springs 12 have moved the cover to its partially open position, it must be swung by hand to its full open position shown in full lines in Fig. 1, in which latter position the springs 12 will retain it, as clearly shown iu said ligure.
The projecting upper end of the plug l is formed with a reduced externally screw threaded portion 11i which provides an annular shoulder 15 and which is adapted to enter the enlarged screw threaded lower end of a cap or head 1G. The latter has a cylindrical bore 17 in which is rotatably mounted a hollow or inverted cup-shaped plug 18 adapted to control the outlet of water through two branch pipes or connections 1t), 20 to which suitable hose couplers may be connected. The rotary plug or key 18 has its open bottom resting upon the reduced upper end of the plug or pipe 1 and in communication with the latter' and in its side walls is formed an opening 21 adapted to be brought into register with either ol the pipes or connections 19 20, which latter' are screwed into the head 16, as shown at 22. The closed upper end of the plug or cock 18 has a reduced integral stem 23 of cylindrical forni rotatable in a concentric opening in the top ol the head 16 and it is retained in said opening by means of a suitable pin 24. The projecting extremity of the stem 23 has a llat faced or rectangular reduced portion 25 adapted to enter a similarshaped socket or opening formed centrally in a cross bar or handle 26 by means of which the cock 18 may be rotated. lVliile the hose pipes or connections 19, 2() may be of any llt) suitable form they are here shown as adapted to receive my improved hose couplers set tort-h in my co-pending application for patent, Serial Number 467,315, led December l2, 1908.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed is:
l. A device otl the character described comprising a box, a removable cover therefor, a stand pipe or plug having its lower end secured in the ground and its upper end projecting through an opening in the bottom of the box and formed at opposite points vith recesses, fastening bars seated in Ysaid recesses and secured to the bottom of the box and a valve controlled means atthe upper end of the pipe or plug for .the attachment of a hose.
2. A device of the character described comprising a box, a hinged cover therefor, a fastener for said cover, springs for lit'ting the cover when the fastener is released, a stand pipe or plug extending upwardly through the bottom of the box and secured therein, and a valve controlled means at the upper end of the pipe or plug for the attachment of a hose.
A device of the character described comprising a box, a removable cover therefor, a sta-nd pipe or plug project-ing through the bottom of the box and having a reduced screw threaded upper end, a cap or head screwed upon said reduced end of the plug and formed in its top with a centrally arranged opening, a hose connection or pipe opening into said cap or head, a rotary inverted cup-shaped cock rotatable in said head and having its open bottom resting upon the reduced upper end of the stand pipe, said plug being formed with an opening to be brought into and out of register with said hose connection or pipe, said cock being formed upon its top with an upwardly projecting cylindrical stem rotatable in the central opening' in the upper portion of the cap or head and a handle upon the projecting end of said stem.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
