M. SULZBAGH'ER.
Water-Closets.
No. 196,721; Patented Oct. 30, 1877.

UNITED STATES MIRUM SULZBAGHER,
PATENT OFFICE.
on NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WATER-CLOSETS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,721, dated October 30, 1877; application filed September 13,1877.
To all whom it may concern:
- Be it known that I, MIRUM of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Water-Closets, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a vertical section of a closet constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a like section in the line .00 :10, Fig. 1.
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to that class of water.- closets for which I made application for Letters Patent of the United States conjointly with Cordelia E. Yvelin, which application was allowed July 14, 1877 and it consists in the combination of a hopper having a waterinletnear its top edge, a water-supply pipe connecting with said inlet, a waste-pipe connected to the open bottom end of the hopper, a faucet in the supply-pipe, a faucet'in the waste-pipe, a horizontal rock-shaft extending from the plug of the supply-faucet to the plug of the waste-faucet, a lever mounted on said rock-shaft, a vertical rod connected to said lever and extending up through the seat of the closet, and a spring or weight, or both, attached to said lever, the same having a tend ency to move the lever, together with the rock-shaft, to such a position as to close both said faucets; and hence, when the parts are allowed to follow the action of said spring or weight, the faucets are automatically closed, while, when the vertical rod is raised, the lever, and through it the rock-shaft, is moved against the action of said spring or weight, and both faucets are opened.
In the drawing, the letter A designates the. hopper of my closet, and b is the inlet-opening of the hopper, to which opening is connected a pipe, B, which is intended to be connected also with a water-supply source.
To the open bottom end of the hopper A is connected a waste-pipe, G.
In both the supply-pipe B and in the waste pipe 0 is arranged a faucet, D or E, the same being arranged in a corresponding horizontal plane, as shown. The plugs of these faucets D and E are each secured to a horizontal shaft, E, which extends from one to the other of said plugs, thus forming continuations of the same, and to a suitable part of this shaft is secured a lever, G. To one end of this lever G is con- SULZBAQHER,
nected a rod, H, which extends up through the seat I of the closet, where it is provided with a handle, 0.
From the end of the lever G to which the vertical rod H is connected is-suspended a weight, J, while to the other end thereof is connected one end of a spring, K, the other end of which is fastened to the under side of the seat I. v
The spring K and weightJ are designed to cooperate, and one or the other thereof may be dispensed with, if desirable.
Said spring K and weight J are so arranged relatively to the faucetsl) and E that by the action of said spring and weight on the lever G, and through this lever on the shaft F, the faucets are closed; and hence, when the parts are allowed to follow such action, the faucets are closed automatically, and are, moreover, kept in a closed condition.
In order to open the faucets D and E it is only necessary to raise the rod H, so as to tilt the lever G, and turn the shaft F against the action of the spring K and weight J, the plugs of the faucets being thus turned to such a position that their holes are presented to the inlet and outlet channels thereof.
The plug of the waste-faucet E is preferably provided with a round hole of equal diameter to the waste-pipe O, as shown in Fig. 1, so that no sediment is allowed to form alongside the hole.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, in a water-closet, of a hopper having a water-supply pipe connecting with said inlet, a waste-pipe connected to the open bottom end of the hopper, a faucet in the supply-pipe, a faucet in the waste-pipe, a horizontal rock-shaft extending from the plug of the supply-faucet to the plug of the wasteaucet, a lever mounted on said rockshaft, a vertical rod connected to said lever and extending up through the seat of the closet, and a spring or weight, or both, attached to said lever, the whole being adapted to operate substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 12th day of September, 1877.
