To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JACK MINOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of 'Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in toys.

The obj ect of the invention is to provide a toy with joints and covering, to represent as near as possible an opossum.

A further object of the invention is to provide means for permitting movement between the head and body portion of the figure; also to arrange mechanism between the parts representing the lower jaw, ton ue and eyes, so that movement of one wil move them all to make the figure more life-like and have the characteristics of the living animal.

A further object of the invention is to provide a covering to simulate the fur of the animal, and attach to it an extension to inclose a flexible element to represent a tail piece.

The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction, which will be hereinafter referred to and particularly pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings-Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved toy. Fig. 2, is a similar view, with the fur omitted. Fig. 3 is a detail view showing the attachment of the tail.

The numeral 1, indicates a body portion, provided with flattened surfaces 2, and 3, on which operate the flattened surfaces of upper legelements 4 and 5. The elements 4, and 5, are pivoted to the body portion 1, by fastening devices 6, and at or near the lower ends of said elements are pivotally mounted the fore leg sections 7, and S. This construction permits the parts representing the legs to be moved in a life-like manner as will be readily understood.

The forward end of the body portion is provided with a lug l0, which fits into a head section 11, the latter and the ear being pivoted together by a fastening 12. On the outer ends of the fastening 12, are ear sections 13, which are also movable. The inner end 14, of the head section 11 and the front edge of the body section 1, are spaced somewhat so as to permit movement of the head on its fastening 12. The lower front portion 16, of the head is provided with projections representing upper teeth, and in rear thereof is pivotally mounted a forwardly projecting Specification of Letters Patent.

The inner end of the lower jaw 17 may be provided with gear teeth 18, which mesh with gear teeth on a tongue section 19, guided in the head section. In the head section are the eye balls 20, having a yoke 21, connected by a link 22, with the lower jaw, 17. By the described connections between the lower jaw, tongue and eyes, obviously when the lower jaw is moved the tongue will be projected, and the eyes made to roll, giving to the gure a life like action. The tail may be formed by securing to the rear of the body portion 1, a tubular extension 23, inclosing a flexible element 24, which may be in the form of a spring or rubber, the object being that the tail may be twisted, or set in any desired position, and yet retain its shape.

The head section and ears are covered with suitable material to represent the fur of the opossum. The body 1, will be covered by similar material, so also the leg sections. The tubular extension 23, may be covered with, or formed of the same material as the rest of the figure or instead of fastening the extension to the body portion 1, it may be secured to the covering placed over the same, as shown in Fig. 3.

A figure toy constructed as shown and described represents an opossum, and by the peculiar arrangement Vof the joints, and tail section the toy may be manipulated to give it a life like appearance.

The construction of the joint between the head and body is such that the two sections will not bind, and when covered the space between is hidden from view.

The invention is simple and may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost.

-What I claim is 1. A toy representing an opossum, comprising a body section, a head section pivotally secured to the body section, a lower jaw section having an enlarged end pivotally mounted on the head section, a tongue section slidably mounted in the head section and overlying and engaging the enlarged end of the jaw section to project and retract the tongue section when the j aw section is moved on its pivotal connection.
