LENORA PRICE, OF DAVENPORT, OKLAHOMA.
DOLL.
Application filed April 4, 1917.
To all Iv/mm. it may concern:
Be it known that I, IinNonA Pinon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Davenport, in the county of Lincoln and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dolls.
The object of the invention is to provide a doll which is thoroughly waterproof in order that it may be washed and maintained in a clean and sanitary condition, so as to obviate danger of the transmission of disease germs.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a doll of this character which is of life like appearance, is provided with movable joints and is constri'icted of light material so that it may be easily handled by a small child.
IVith the abovev objects in view the invention includes a doll constructed in the manner hereinafter set forth and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a view of the doll;
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the doll constructed in accordance with the invention and shown as it would appear before the waterproofing solution was applied;
Fig. 3 is a similar view looking at the doll from the rear;
Fig. 4 is a similar view looking at the side of the doll;
Fig. 5 is a detail view of one of the arms; and
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view showing the manner of attaching the arms to the body.
In forming the head there is provided a face piece 10 cut on the bias from suitable fabric such as sheeting and the like. Stitched to the face piece 10 is a strip 11 of fabric cut on the bias, this strip forming the upper forward portion and sides of the head. The rear of the head is composed of two pieces 12 which are joined together by a seam 13 and are stitched to the strip 11 as shown. Beneath the chin there is provided two bias strips l l which are stitched together beneath the center part of the chin and are joined to the face piece 10 and the rear head piece 12, the strip 11 tapering to a point at the lower side of the head. The
face piece 10 is provided with darts 15 beneath each of the checks in order to '[JIOViflO for the bulge at. this pertain of the face.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 30, 1918.
Serial No. 159,706.
After the parts which form the head are joined together, the face portion is covered with a suitable solution preferably of white shellac and placed in a mold to dry. A mixture of shellac and saw dust or very light n'iaterial is molded into the rear of the face and an adhesive is used to stiffen and hold the said face in shape. The head may then be filled with cotton or any other suitable filler and the lower portion is brought to gether and formed into a neck.
The body of the doll to which the head is secured is formed preferably of two front pieces 16, which are stitched together as shown at 17. This forms the front half of the body. The rear of the body is formed of a single piece of fabric 18, the lower portion of which is formed with a dart 19 to i give this part of the body the proper shape.
The front piece 16 and the rear piece 18 are stitched together at their lower ends. The body is provided with a suitable filling and so shaped as to provide arm sockets 20 and leg sockets 21. The arms are preferably formed of three pieces of fabric. the outside piece 22 forming one half of the arm and hand, and the opposite half of the arm is formed of the sections 23 and 24, the section 24 being preferably formed of heavier material in order to resist wear. The lower end of the joined pieces 22 and 23 are shaped and stitched to form the fingers of the hand. The legs are formed in the manner similar to the arms, that is they comprise the outer pieces 25, and the opposite inner pieces which are formed of the sections 26 and 27, the section 27 being of heavier material than the rest of the leg. The foot. which is oined to the leg by the stitching 28 is formed of the inner and outside pieces 29 and 30 respectively and the stiffened bottom piece 3]. The toes are formed by shaping and stitching in the manner shown. Both the arms and legs are pivoted to the body so that their positions may be changed. the pivoted means consisting of wooden disks 39 secured within an upper end of the arms and legs, and similar disks 33 in the body and to which the disks 32 are pivotally connected. The wires 35 provide a pivoting means between these members and the body. After the above members of which the doll is com- I posed are stiffened, shaped and assembled. the doll is treated with a covering of smooth flour paste, and when this paste is dry it is WEttGIPIOOf, it is then flesh tinted with waterproof enamel and the hair and features are supplied with a waterproof paint.
From' the foregoing it will be seenthat the invention provides a doll which is sani-, tary, light and durable in character and one in which the limbs are capable of being moved to any desired position.
Having described the invention, What is claimed is: V I
A doll head comprising a back piece composed of sections, a front piece cut at one edge on the bias, a gore cut on the bias and connected at'opposite edges with the back and front pieces, a chin piece connected with the back and front pieces below the gore and means for retaining the head in shape.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature;
