'APiAR'A'rUs l non CASTING s'TEREOTYrE-PLATESL Specification of Letters Patent. i Patented June-15,1909.'
Application filed August 17, 1908. Serial No 448,893.
T o all whom it' may (imcern:
lie il' known that I, HENRY F. BECHMAN, of Battle Creek. in the 'county of Calhoun i and State of l\lichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Casting Stereotype-Plates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a, full. clear, and exact description tliereof, reference being had to` the accompanying drawings, which formpart of this specification. 1
This invention is an apparatus for `casting stereotype plates, and is'especially designed for casting single pagef'tubular plates which are substantially complete cylinders land adapted to surround the surface of the plate cylinders to which they' areattached in par.- tcular and the inventionis-an improvement upon the casting apparatusshownfin my vapplication tiled December 5th, 1907, Serial No. 405,204 and its object is to enable a single tubular plate containing but. one lnewspaper page of matter to loe-cast ofya size and form to iit upon and surround Sina-ll plate cylin ders such as are used in connection with the novel rotary web printing machine shown in my Patents-Nos. 867,230 and 867,231, dated October 1st, 1907. 1
The invention will be clearly understood from the following descri tiony in connection with the accompanying rawings, 'forming part thereof, and which shows the pr'esent perfected form of the apparatus, although I` -do not restrict myself to the precise details of construction shown as they are *capable of modification by one skilled in the 'art within the scope of the present invention.
In the drawings: Figure l, is side elevation of a complete apparatus, showing the parts in closed position, and also showing the cope and core in open positions in dotted lines. F ig. 2, is an enlarged top plan view of Fig. l also showing the cope in open position in dotted line. Fig. 3, is an enlarged lsectional view on line 3-3, Fig. l, showing a matrix secured in themachine, vparts broken away. Fig. 4, is an enlarged sectional view showing the matrix holding devices and also showing the fside-sticl open in dotted line. Fig. 5, is a detail vertical sectional View showing the side-stickand core in position in the drag. the cope open. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective \'"iew of the side stick. i Fig. I T is a similar view of the core. i
The machineyenibodies-a .drag lgwhich is preferably"mounted in vertical position u'ponI a Asupporting lframe, composed ofzside pieces 7 andbase plate 73;? Thisdrag ,has-a' semi'- circular recess in its front face corr'espend--` ing in contour to one half ofthe cylindrical' plate to be cast in the machine.
'The core 2, is cylindrical ,in cross vsection and corresponds-in 4diameter to thatof` the press cylinderito which the plates are to be attached. The" 'core has a circumferential flange 2a which forms thebottom of the mold during the casting.l operations. @The core' is provided at its lowerl end with trunnions 2b upon which are mounted rollers 2c that rest upon the upper edges of 4the side pieces 7, and below these trunnions and in a'Xial aline-A inent with the core 2 and rigidly connected therewith is a weight or counter-'balance 2dl which is calculated to practically counterbalance the weight of the core -upon'the trunnions and` thusl enable the co're to Abe readily swung to either vertical or inclined position. The core is guided in its movements to andV lfrom the drag and prevented from running oi the ways on side pieces 7 by means of arms. 2e which are rigidlyfastened tothe trunnions 2b or lower part of core and may be cast'theiewitli and are provided with pins 2f which maybe provided with rollers that engage curved' guide slots 7b inthe side 'pieces 7, and not only limitthe i movement of the core, but cause it to swing to tap ,inclined position when ;it is pulled awayfrom the drag and to assume a vertical position when it is moved toward ,the drag. The upper end of the core is preferably beveled as at 2r to form-a gate and facilitate pouring of themetal into the mold; and it may be provided withV a handle-2j to facilitate raising or lowering of the core.
3, which has a semi-circular recess in its inner. face corresponding in contour-to onelialf the plateto be cast-'and slightly greater t 95 l Hinged to one side of the drag 1 is a cope l the space between the cope and drag and the interposed core forming an annular casting chamber into which metal can be poured through the`gate 2r at the topr of the core.
The cope may be fastened to the drag,
ner that it will naturally tend to force the matrix outward against the Walls of thedragand cope and insure a clean and-pert'ect casting.
lt is obvious 'that such machines can be made to produce cylindrical tubular platesot any desired diameter and length and also it desired they canbe adapted to cast a plube readily 4done with great accuracy and,
practically, the fastening of the other edge of thematrix is accomplished automatically b v closing oi the cope.
Having described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters .Patent is: y n
