,CCENTRC HINGE FOR HOLDING FLASKS.
. Specification otLetters Patent.
Patented May iti, i922.
Application ledlebruary 21,;1921. `Serial No. 446,792.
To all 'ui/0m t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN FISHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county et Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eccentric Hinges for Molding Flasks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a hinge connection for molding flasks and the like so arranged as to vary the aXis of the hinge connection, in order to properly position the same with relation to the cope and drag of the flask, when the pattern plate is in position between the cope and drag as well as when the pattern plate has been removed. By the arrangement of such a hinge connection the cope and drag may be readily swung apart so as to permit removal of the pattern plate, and as readily swung together again in order to form the mold ready to receive the metal, and as a consequence there will be a great saving of time and energy.
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of the cope of a mold having the improved hinge connection.
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the drag thereof.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the cope and drag in position with a pattern plate between the same.
Fig. l is a side elevation ot' one of the hinge connections showing the position of the same when the pattern plate is between the cope and drag.
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the position of the hinge connection when the pattern plate is removed.
Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section on the line 6 6 ot Fig. t.
In the drawings I have shown the improved hinge connection as employed in connection with a molding flask including a usual cope 1 and a drag 2, the latter being provided with upwardly projecting guide pins co-operating with guide lugs 4f formeel upon the cope. A pattern plate 5 is adapted to be received between the cope and the drag and is provided with lugs 6 through which pins 3 are adapted to be received, so as to be engaged by guide lugs e and thus accurately position the cope, pattern plate and drag relative to one another.
As an instance of this arrangement hinge 1 n n "A erackets 7 kare provided upon one side of the Ycope and are provided with projecting hinge lugs 8 having upwardly extending bearing slots 9 in their ends. Hingebrackets l0 are provided upon the drag in alinement with bracket 7 and are formed with projecting hinge lugs ll spaced from one another and having alined bearing apertures l2 in their ends. A bearing rod lll is journalcd at its respective ends in the bearing lugs of the respective hinges, and the portions of this rod between the bearing lugs ll of each hinge form eccentric pintles l5 of reduced diameter and adapted to be received in the bearing slots 9 of hinge lugs 8.
By this arrangement it will be seen that rotation of the bearing rod lll will canse a shitting ot the aXis of the hinge connection thus provided. In practice the parts are so arrangedthat the shifting olf the anis of' the hinge connection, which may be obtained, will be equal to the thickness of pattern plate 5 adapted to be received between the cope and the drag. The hinge connection is adjusted so as to space the cope and the drag, and when the pattern plate is in position, the cope may be swung open for removal of the plate. After the pattern plate has been removed, rod lll is rotated so as .to adjust the hinge connection and thereby cause the cope to lit tightly upon the drag when subsequently swung closed, in order to form the mold ready to receive the metal.
Rod ifi is adapted to be locked in its adjusted positions for varying the position of the axis ol: the hinge connection, an d tor this purpose pins 1G extend from the respective ends of the rod at circumlferentially spaced points. Stops 17 project from the outside hinge lugs lll of the respect-ive hinge connections, and the pins 1G are so arranged that when engaged by the respective adjacent stops the rod lll will be locked against rotation in one or the other of' its adjusted positions.
ln order to provide for the engaging and disengaging ot the pins 1G and the stops, the rod lll is preferably arranged for slight longitudinal movement of the pins and stops and so positioned that when the rod is shitted in one direction axially7 one of the pins will be engaged by this stop, while the opposite pin will have moved beyond its stop, and in similar manner when the rod is shift- 2. A molding ask comprising a cope and drag having a hinge connection arranged for adjustment of the axis thereof relative to the flask, and means for locking the hinge connection in adjusted positions.
3. A molding flask comprising a cope and drag having hinge connections eccentrically arranged so as to adjust the axis of said connection` relative to the flask, said eccentric adjustment including a pivot rod extending from one hinge connection to the other.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification.
JOHN FISHER.
