MOLD FLASK.

To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD Bossmrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas County, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mold Flasks, of which the following is a specification, reference being' had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a plan of a mold embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, partly in section; Fig. 3 is a section on lines III-III of Fig. 2; and Fig. Il: is a section on lines IV-IV of Fig. 3.
My invention relates to improvements in mold flasks, and in particular is directed to so designing the flask and in so forming' the molds that the resulting castings are much more accurate and uniform than is now the practice. To this end I have provided vliask bands so arranged and centered nthat the cope and drag' of the mold are accurately centered and the danger from careless handling is substantially obviated. My invention also comprises various features which I shall hereinafter describe and claim.
Referring' to the drawings, the cope and drag flasks 2 and 3 are out away to provide room for the iask bands 4l and 5 which engage opposite sides of the usual pattern 1 plate 6, which extends outwardly between the flasks 2 and 3 and beyond the ends thereof. rlhe cope band l is provided at one end with an outward projection having a slot 7 therethrough into which the dowel 8 on a similarly placed projection on the drag band 5 extends, and at the other end with a similar projection having a hole 7a therethrough into which the dowel 8 on the drag band eX- tends. The pattern plate 6 has an opening near each end through which the dowel 8 projects in order to position the pattern plate relative to the flask bands l and 5.
At the sides of each iask are secured the guides l0, and eaelr band may if desired be provided with bearing' pads 11 against which the guides 10 may bear and thus assist in centering the bands relative to the flasks.
Each of the guides 10 for the cope flask 2 is provided at each end with an inwardly extending foot 12, shown in Fig. t, which seats in a notch 13 in the cope band 4, so that when the cope flask is locked about its band the foot 12 is engaged in the notch 13 and lifting of the flask 2 will also lift the ed from the drag band 4, will be later described. The cope 2 and plate G have guiding apertures 14 and 14a for the guiding projections 15, which guide both the cope flask as it is lifted from the pattern plate as well as the pattern plate as it is lifted from the drag, and prevent injury to the mold by requiring' that these parts be lifted vertically.
Each fiask has the usual hinge 1G and locking mechanism 17.
In utilizing' my improved flasks in the making of a mold the melder closes the cope flask 2 about its flask band 1l, and places the assembled cope 2 and band 4t in inverted position on a molding machine or bench. I-Ie next places the pattern plate 6 in position on the cope 2, so that it is supported on the ends of the guides 10. I-Ie next places the drag band 5 in inverted position on the pattern plate 6 with its dowels 8 extending' through the pattern plate (S and slots 7, and then the drag tlask, also in inverted position, is placed on top, this being guided into position by the' guides 1st and 15 and supported on the et of the brackets or guides 10.
The drag flask 3 is rammed full of sand and a molding board placed upon the top. The assembly is inverted, so that the drag flask 3 will then be on the bottom, resting on the molding board, and the cope Q is then rammed full of sand.
rlhe cope 2 with its band and the 'sand therein is next carefully lifted oit the pattern plate (S and set to one side. rllhe interlock between the projections 12 on the cope guides 10 and the cope band e causes the band le to be lifted with the cope. rIhe inwardly projecting ridge or sand strip t around the bottom of the band 4 assists in supporting the sand during' this removing operation. 'Ihe pattern plate G is next lift- 3 and the cope 2 is then replaced on the drag 3. Finally, the entire flask is unlocked and removed, leaving the flask bands in place in the mold, and the finished mold is carried to the pouring floor.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the finished mold, ready for pouring', thus not only has its cope and drag accurately centered by the interlocking engagement of the cope and drag bands t and 5, but it also is thoroughly reinforced thereby. This interlocking engagement between the two bands is also extremely important in maintaining the cope and drag in position, since sie even if the melder carrying the finished mold to the pouring floor happens to lean with appreciable force against the mold, it obviates the danger of the cope and drag shifting relative to each other. lt is further to be noted that the improved bands have a relatively stiff T-section which is not readily sprung out of shape. After the casting operation has been completed, the bands, of course, are removed from the mold and may be used repeatedly.
The terms and expressions which l have employed are used as terms of description and not of' lin'iitation7 and l have no intention; in the use of such terms and expressions; oi' excluding an;7 equivalents ot' the features shown and described, or portions thereof, but recognize that various modifications are possible Within the scope of the invention claimed.
What l claim is:
l. A molding flask comprising a cope; a drag; a cope band and a drag band having a slot and projection engagement; a pattern plate; and means for maintaining the pattern plate in centered relation to the cope and drag bands.
2. A molding flask con'iprising a cope; a drag; a cope band and a drag band having a slot and projection engagement; a pattern plate; means for maintaining' the pattern plate in centered relation to the cope and drag bands; and guiding means between the cope and dragbands.
3. A molding` i'iask comprising a cope; a
drag; a cope band and a drag band having a slot and projection engagement; a pattern plate; means for niaintaining the pattern plate in centered relation to the cope and drag bands; and interlocking means betvveen the cope and its band whereby the lifting of the cope will lift With it the band and the sand formed Within the cope.
4f. A molding flask comprising a cope; a
drag; a cope band; a drag band; and a pat tern plate; the cope and drag bands forining means for supporting the sand after the removal of the cope and drag members of the flask, said bands having interlocking means for maintaining their centered rela tion to each other irrespective of other centering means in the flask.
