Be it known that I, FRANK U. ARENZ, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of lVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flask Pins; and I do hereby declare that the 'following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
This invention relates to moulding flasks for foundries, and is particularly directed to a novel form of flask pin.
In foundry work, considerable difliculty has been encountered in positioning the cope upon the drag in assembling the flasks and in removing the cope from the drag in opening the flasks, particularly during the moulding operation. One source of trouble has been due to the inability of the moulder to maintain the cope and flask in accurate alinement while he is either fitting the brackets upon the dowel pin or removing them therefrom. The resulting angularity between the cope and the drag will cause the dowel pins to bind and will therefore jar the mould and frequently shatter it.
It is to overcome these defects that the present invention is designed, and the objects of this invention, therefore, are to provide a novel form of flask pin whereby binding is wholely avoided. Although a slight angularity between the cope and drag may exist during the relative motion of the parts; to rovide a novel form of flask pin so constructed that the most accurate final alinement is secured when the cope is positioned upon the drag, but which allows a slight play and tilting to occur without in any manner binding or hampering the operation of the moulder.
Further objects are to provide an improved flask pin which may be very cheaply manufactured, which is of sturdy and simple design, and which is so constructed that the entering of the flask pins is insured.
An embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical, fragmentary elevation of the flask pins mounted upon a cope and drag, such figure corresponding to a section on the line 11 of Figure 2.
Figure 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a detail of the pivotally mounted pin receiving block for one of the flask pins.

Referring more particularly to the drawlngs, it will be seen that the cope 1 is provided with a bracket 2 upon one side, the bracket having an elongated opening 3 therethrough, and, if desired, provided with a projecting portion t constituting a handle for the cope. The other side of the cope is provided with a bracket 5 having parallel webs 6 and may have an outwardly projecting portion 7 adapted to be used as a handle. Between the webs 6 a block 8 is pivotally mounted by means of the pointed screws 9, such screws cooperating with corresponding recesses in the side faces of the block 8, as may be seen from Figure 2. This block is provided with a central aperture 10 adapted to receive the dowel pin 11 carried by the bracket 12 mounted upon the cope 13. It is to be noted that the fit between the pin 11 and aperture 10 is relatively close while the fit between the aperture 3 and. the correspending dowel pin 15 is relatively close as regards lateral motion, but relatively loose as regards motion in the other direction, due to the elongation of the aperture 3. The pin 15 may be conveniently carried by the bracket 14, similar to the bracket 12, and mounted upon the opposite side of the cope 13.
It is to be noted, from reference to Figures 1 and 8 that the projecting portion 7 may continue rearwardly across the bottom of the bracket 5. This portion is provided with a relatively large aperture 16 through which the dowel pin 11 may freely pass. The apertured block 8 is provided with aflat lower face adapted to contact with the bottom of the bracket 5, as shown in Figure 3, to limit the angle through which it may tilt. This construction is designed to insure the entering of the dowel pin 11 within the aperture 10 of the block 8.
When the moulder places the cope 1 upon the drag 13, he allows pin 11 to enter the opening 10 of the block 8. The pin 15 will enter the opening 3 of the drag 2. Any slight angularity that may exist between the cope and drag is accommodated by the pivotally mounted block 8 and the elongated aperture 3, as will be obvious. However, the block 8 and pin 11 accurately aline the side walls of the cope and drag and when the mould is closed. The block 8 is very close to the base of the pin 11, thereby insuring the most accurate alinement pos sible. The aperture 3 prevents any sidewise motion of the drag 2 and thereby insures alineinent of allot the sides of the cope and drag. r
It will, therefore, be seen that a novel form of flask pin has been provided, which prevents the binding of the dowel pins when the cope is being manipulated, which insures.

Although one specific form of the yinvention has been described-in considerable detail, it is to be understood, that the inven- .tion may be variously modified without departing from the spirit therof and such invention is, therefore, to be limited onlyas set forth in the appended claims.
I claim 1. The combination of a copev and drag, said drag being provided with upwardly projecting dowel pins, brackets carried by said -cope and having apertures through which said dowel pins may pass, one of said brackets having a p votally mounted apertured block adapted to receive the corresponding dowel pin and the other. of said brackets having means for permitting relative angular motion between such bracket and the corresponding pin.
