ADJUSTABLE MOLD.

The invention has :tor an object to provide simple and eiiicient means for varying the size of a cored mold; to adapt it to produce ldifferent sizes of bodies, and to receive and hold in proper position' different sizes of cores appropriate to the several sizes of bodies for which it can be set. lt has for a further object to incorporate these features of adjustment in a twin mold in a manner to produce any of the several sizes of cored body portions -in the same symmetrical or other predetermined relation to the inte grally attached member, notwithstanding the variation in size of the cored body. It has for a still further object to adapt the mold -for casting' variable sizes of bodies, either singly or.` in twinl form, with the core permanently retained in the cored member and protruding therefrom, as, for instance, in cases where the core embodies a lconstruction in its protruding portion which is adapted to serve a useful purpose; for example, when an attaching leg is cast upon a ,binding post, `p (nnecting screw, conducting cable, or the i re.
The invention proceeds upon theprinciple of having a wall or walls of the adjustable portion of the mold Vnot 'only movable to determine the size of body which will be formed between' them, but constructed to re ceive and support in proper position cores of different sizes, so that by adjusting the wall or walls until the space between them corresponds to the particular length of a corethat is to be subsequently removed from the casting, or the particular position of a core member that is to be embedded in the cast body, a body will be cast that will be appropriate in size to the particular core used, or in other words, different sizes or characters of core can be made to assume proper relawalls being recessed toiec'eive the sustaining portion of the core, and the mold being dvided in a plane intersecting theiecesses that the core can be laid in the .position which it is to have when the mold is Closed thereon; and the core will constitute the closure for the recess or recesses that were formed to position it inthe mold cavity.. Then the mold is used for twin cast structures, or structures comprising a body with an integrally united shank or other member, and itis desired to have the cored body disposed symmetrically with relation to its integral part, two walls of the adjustable part tion to the body tovbe cast; the adjustable will be adjustable equally with relation to the cavity which Jforms the integral part.

ln addition to the molding space produced by the cavities 5, 5, the mold may have additional cavities 15, 15 merging with the cavities 5, 5 and of any suitable form7 for instance, in the form of an annulus, the inner Wall of which is developed by the relief portions or projections 16, 16, 17, 17'al represent the complementary portions of the gate, and this gate preferably communicates With the mold space developed by the cavities 15, 15a.
As suggested in Figure 5, the mold may be used to cast a head or attaching lug` on a screw 1S; as suggested in Figure 6 the mold is equally useful for casting,` such an attach ing heador lug on the end of a conducting cable 19. When equipped with a core such as slioivn in Figures El and l the core completely closes the recesses in the end Walls of the cavity. lVhen used as suggested in Figures 5 and 6 some suitable means will be employed for closing the upper cavities of the mold, such, for instance. as the disk 20. lll/when used as equipped in Figures 3 and el. the article produced will be substantially that shown in Figure 7, in which both the integral members have openings therethrough. When used as equipped in Figures 5 and 6 the core members remain permanently With the casting as useful parts thereof.
I claim:
1. In a mold7 the combination of ivalls separable to open the'mold, a Wall adjustable on said separable Walls to vary the cavity space of the mold. said adjustable ivall bei divided and having' its respective members independently and adjustably secured to and opened with said separable Walls. and a core in the cavity of the mold recessed into the meeting fai es of said adjustable ivall and released by the separation of the members thereof in the openinzgT of the mold; said core having` a shoulder engaging` the members of the adjustable Wall and positioning them in their adjustment.
2. A divided mold comprising separable members constructed With complementary cavities forming ay molding space having Walls defining said cavities provided With recesses, and a core resting on said Walls in the recesses thereof and positioned thereby in the molding space; a Wall being adjustable to vary said molding space; and the core having a shoulder which engages the Wall to limit the adjustment thereof.

A divided mold constructed of members lniving complementary cavities, opposed walls in a cavity each provided with a recess adapted to receive and position one end of a core7 and a connected cavity in a mold member adapted to mold a part projecting integrally from the cast of the cavities first named; said 'falls being both adjustable to change the distance bet-Ween them in symmetri zal relation to the connected cavity.
6. A divided mold comprising members constructed ivith complementary cavities each provided with a pair of end Walls, the end Walls of t-he respective cavities being comj'ilementary and providing complete end Walls for the molding chamber developed by said cavities; a Wall of one cavity and the `comple'mentary Wall of the other cavity being similarly adjustable to vary the dimensions of the mold space.
