Patented June 16, 1925.
cumin? 1:. runs, on NEW YORK, N. Y.
Application filed April 11, 1924. Serial No. 705,775.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Cmr'roN D. PE'1'1IS a citizen of the United States, and a residelu of New York city, in the county and State I} of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting Molds,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to moldsfor casting metal but more particularly to that "class 10 of casting molds designed to be repeatedly used in the casting operation and commonly desi ated permanent molds.
e primer object of the invention is to produce a mo d of this type which is simple and durable in construction and which may be quickly and easily operated to provide a lar output.
urther important objects are to PTOVldl:
a simple and elfioient means for supporting 50 an insert within the mold cavity during the casting operation, to provide in the mold improved means for holding the mold sections in closed position during the casting operation, to rovide an improved construction to close t e mold, to facilitate the placing of this closure upon the drag prior to the casting operation and its removal therefrom upon the completion of such operation, to provide effective venting of the gases from the mold, to prevent injury to the refractories, and in general to provide an improved casting mold.
The many other objects and advantages of my invention will be better understood 85 by reference to the following specification when considered in connection with the accompanying drawings illustrating certain selected embodiments thereof, in which iThe general construction of my improved 40; casting mold is similar in character to that forming the subject matter of my pending applications, Serial No. 633,131, filed April 19, 1923; Serial No. 633,822, filed April 23, 1923, and Serial No. 637,165, filed lay 7,
45 1923, and reference may be had thereto for a more full description.
While I have chosen to illustrate the principles of my inventionin a mold designed particularly forthe casting of railway brake shoes, it Will be readily appreciated that the same are equally applicable to molds for casting a y other a twla Referring to the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevatmn of a mold for casting brake shoes, the parts being in closed position.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the mold shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is the same as Fig. 1, end elevation.
g. 4 is a transverse vertical section on the 44 of: Fig. 2.
Fig. 5 is a longitudinal vertical section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a detail plan view of the drag.
Fig. 7 is an inverted plan view of the mold closure with back unit in position and ready to be placed in the mold.
Fi 8 is a. longitudinal vertical section on the line 8--8 of Fig. 7.
Fi 9 is a transverse section on line 9-9 of Fig. 7, and
Fig. 10 is a detail perspective view.
The casting mold in the present embodiment is mounted on a base A and comprises a plurality of separable members forming a flask or holder, each member carrying a portion of the molding receptacle. The base A is provided with oppositely disposed lugs and 16, whi h support a rod 17 on which are pivotally mounted the two side members B, B of in. mold. Similar rods 18 and 19 are supported by lugs 20 and 21 respectively and the end members C of the mold are pivotally mounted on these rods. The members B, B are operated by cams 22, 22 co-acting with lugs 23 on these members. The cams 22, 22 are each socured upon a sleeve revoluble upon opositely disposed stud shafts 24 supported )y upstanding lugs 25 on the base A and these sleeves are adapted to be manually rotated by means of operating levers 26.
The members B, B are alike in form except that their arrangement is reversed. Each of these members includes a metal holder or flask section in which are mounted a plurality of blocks 28 forming a portion of the molding receptacle. In the present embodiment these blocks are of ighly refractory material, though metal blocks may be substituted for any of these where chilling actionris desired. The outer wall of the member P is formed by a separable plate 32 secured to the member by screws 33 r other sultable means. This inthe mold. The sections 73 and 74 are then placed in position on the reinforcing back, and the side members are moved to closed position, the lugs 37 holding all sections of the closure firmly in position. The end members are now moved to closed position and the mold is ready to receive the melted metal. After the casting has solidified sufficiently, the end members are moved to open position, then one or both of the side members, and the casting and sections of the top or closure member are together lifted from the remaining portions of the mold, the casting being held by the clips (36. These clips are then straightened at their upper ends, and the shoe casting drops away. The mold is then ready to be reassembled for a new pouring.
From the foregoing description it will be readily evident that my improved mold is simple and desirable in construction and may be easily operated to provide a large output. A simple and eflective means has been provided for suspending the metal insert within the mold cavity during the casting operation. The sections of the mold are securely held in closed position. The construction for clos ing the molding receptacle is simple and advantageous. The closure member may be easily placed upon the drag or removed therefrom. The entire construction provides free venting of the gases from the mold and protects the refractories from injury.
I am aware that numerous changes in the form and arrangement of parts of my mold may be made by anyone skilled in the art. without departing from the spirit of my invention, and I reserve the right to make all such as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
