To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, AUGUST G. GUT- MUELLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond Hill, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain ,new and useful Improvements in Casting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to casting apparatus and more particularly to the type thereof in which the mold cavities are formed in a plastic composition mold, this apparatus being particularly adapted for use in the production of what are known as finished castings. In the production of finished castings, it is essential not only to secure accuracy in the dimensions .of the castings produced, but to have the finish of the castings smooth and the dimensions thereof uniform in all castings made. Such castings ordinarily are made in large numbers, and when drawn from the inold require little or no machine finishing excepting that incidental to the removal of the sprue and sometimes the drilling of holes. By my improved apparatus, I am able to guard against the presence of fins at the parting between the mold parts when two part molds are used, and to provide for the production of a plurality of castings in a single mold With uniform accuracy and ease of manipulation. My invention may be considered as in some respects an improvement upon that described in the application of Charles Pack and Leo F. Nozck, Serial No. 140,707, filed January 5 191 My invention consists primarily in a mold comprising one or more parts formed of a plastic composition such as one employing plaster of Paris as a constituent, this mold having an ingate and run leading into the mold cavity or cavities, a base member on which the moldis mounted, a supplemental member which is adapted to be positioned on top of the mold, this member having an ingate therethrough adapted to register with the ingate in the plastic composition mold, and means for clamping the mold firmly to clamped between the two.

By my invention, I superimpose a member containln mold so t at the same will rest evenly thereon and clamp the supplemental member to the base member with the mold securely This may best be done by the use of a suitable device such asa strap extending around the parts together with the use of a screw or screws which may be tightened to exert just sufli cient pressure to hold the parts firmly toether. The advantage of this construction 1s that the screw may be tightened sulficiently to hold the parts properly in position without crushing t e plastic material of the mold while at the same time movement of the mold or of the upper mold section away from the base plate on account of the pressure exerted by the molten metal in the mold cavities Will be entirely prevented. In the preferred form of my device, the clamping device is slidably secured to the base plate so. that it may readily be adjusted into proper positions for cooperation with molds of different sizes and so that it may readily be moved to the end of the base plate into position for swingin it into an inoperative position for the rapi assembly of molds and removal of the same when the castings have been made.
In order that my invention may be more clearly understood, attention is hereby directed to the accompanying drawings forming part of this application and illustrating a preferred embodiment of my invention.

Referring to the drawings, the mold of plastic material is represented as comprising sections 1 and 2 having a. plurality of mold cavities 3, 3 formed therein, together with an ingate 1. There may, of course, be any desired number of mold cavities connected together and with the ingate by runs and branches in the usual manner. The mold thus formed is represented as resting upon a base plate 5 which may conveniently be formed of metal and which may be provided with lugs 6, 6 adapted to rest upon pipe supports 7, 7 or the like. The supplemental member 8 is adapted to rest upon the top of the upper mold section 1 and may be provided at each end with a handle 9 so that the same may readily be lifted into and removed from position. The supplemental member 8 is providedwith an upward eX- tension 10, preferably at one end of the same, through which extends an ingate 11 adapted to be alined with the ingate 4 of the mold. The ingate 11 is preferably provided with a lining 12 of refractory material, preferably consisting of the same composition as that employed in making the mold sections 1 and 2, this lining being for the purpose of preventing the chilling of the metal poured into the ingate and to minimize the likelihood of its freezing thereto and to facilitate the drawing of the completed casting. The ingate 11 should be of sufliciently great capacity to permit the rapid pouring of the entire charge of metal with a relatively lower rate of flow of the metal through the ingate 4 and the run or runs of the mold. If desired, the supplemental ingate 11 may be of greaterdiameter than the ingate 4 of the mold to facilitate the separation of the clean metal from the dross. The venting of the mold results from the method of making the same and the nature of the composition from which it is made, no provision being required in the apparatus to secure the desired free venting of the mold.
The means by which the described parts are held together during the casting operation will now be described. A yoke 13 is secured at its lower end to the base member 5, a screw 14 extending through the top member ofthe yoke. This screw may be screwed into contact with the upper surface of the supplemental member 8 when the latter is in position on the mold by suitable means such as the hand lever 15, care being taken to apply only enough pressure to hold the parts firmly together without crushing the mold.
Preferably, the base plate 5 is provided momma with slideways 16 on eachof two parallel on gaged in grooves 16. .With this construc-.
tion, the operation of the device is particularly rapid and efli-cient. \Vhen the device is out of use the yoke 13 may hang downwardly from the lugs 17 which are positioned adjacent one end of the grooves 16. A mold such as that formed by the sections 1 and 2 is placed inposition on base plate 5 and the supplemental member 8 positioned on top of that with its ingate 11 in registration with the ingate 4: of the mold. The yoke 13 is then swung upwardly about the lugs 17, 17 as pivots, the end of the screw 14 clearing the handle 9 of member 8 as the yoke is swung up. The yoke is then slid across the apparatus into a position at about the center of the mold whereupon the screw 14 is given a few turns to clamp member 8 and the mold sections with a suflicient pressure to the base plate 5. The point at which the yoke 13 will be positioned will Vary somewhat, of course, when molds of different dimensions are used. WVhen the casting has been poured and has sufiiciently hardened, the screw 14 is released and yoke13 is slid into the end position and swung downwardly into the. dotted line position shown in Fig. 1, whereupon the supplemental member 8 may be lifted. off, the lining 12 remaining in the ingate 11 or sliding therefrom and remaining about the ingate sprue. The mold is then broken up and the castings removed therefrom.
What I claim is:
l. A casting apparatus comprising a mold formed of a plastic composition, having therein a mold cavity, a run communicating therewith, and an ingate communicating with said run, a base member on which said mold is placed, having grooves formed on opposite edges thereof, a supplemental member adapted to be positioned on said mold, sa-idmember having an ingate adapted to register with the ingate of the mold, a yoke having side portions and a top'cross portion, adapted to extend around said mold and supplemental member, said side portions having lugs slidably mounted in said grooves, and a screw extending through the cross portion of said yoke, adapted to press against the upper surface of said supplemental member.
2. A casting apparatus comprising a mold formed of a plastic composition, having memes r m with the ingate of the mold, and a clamping device adapted to secure said parts together, comprising a yoke having side portions on opposite sides of said parts, slidably and pivotally Connected adjacent their ends to one of said members, and a cross portion connecting the opposite ends of said side portions, and a screw extending through said cross portion, adapted, when said yoke is in operative position, to be screwed into en- 10 gagement with the other member.
