To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD SANnsrnoM, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Refuse-Cans, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in refuse cans, and it more particularlyhas for its object to pro vide a can of this character of a very simple and effective construction, which can be easily and cheaply manufactured at a minimum cost and which can be readily attached to the ordinary fence.

Generically, the invention comprises a hinged gate in. the fence to which a can is secured, the can having a hinged top through which the refuse is dumped into the can.

In its more subordinate nature the invention comprises certain novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, all of which will be first described in detail, and then be specifically pointed out in the appended claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, 1s a perspectlve view of the inventlon. Fig. 2, 1sa rear elevation thereof.

Fig. 3, is a central, vertical section on the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the can in its normal position. Fig. 4, is a similar view' showing the can being dumped.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings, in which like letters and numerals of reference, indicate like parts in all of the figures, 1 designates the fence which in cludes the parallel boards 1 from which a section is sawed outto form the door or trap 2, the boards 2 of which are braced by strips 3 which are nailed, screwed or otherwise fastened to the boards as at 3 to hold them together. The fence boards 1 are likewise braced where cut, by strips 4 secured at 4* to the boards.

The can 5 comprises the bottom 5 side 5 and back and front portions 5 and 5 re spectively, the back 5 being larger than the front 5 to leave an opening or beveled mouth over which the lid 6 is hinged as at 6 6* by means of which it can be swung over.

The can is screwed to the door 2 by screw bolts or otherwise as at 7 and the door 2 is hinged at 2 to the fence to swing on a horizontal axis.

A handle 8 is provided on the door 2 by meansof which it may be manipulated.

The lower portion of the can abuts the fence boards and hence serves as a stop to limit the movement of the door 2 to its normal position. i

In the practical application of my invention, the garbage or other refuse is placed in the can through the mouth thereof, and

when it is desired to dump the same, the operator grasps the handle 8 and swings the door and can. in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, to bring it to the position shown in Fig. 3, when the contents thereof will be ejected. By reason of the manner of mounting the can door it will open bygravity as the can is emptied and close again as the can is returned to its normal position.

From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings it is thought the complete construction, operation and numerous advantages of my 1nvention Wlll be readlly understood bylthose skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.

What I claims is A can comprising in combination with a fence or support consisting of a plurality of boards, said boards having a can aperture therein, braces 011 one side of said boards for holding said boards together at such aperture, a door for said aperture formed of series of boards and braces 011 one side thereof for holding the door boards together, thebraced sides of the door boards and fence boards lying in the same plane, hinges connecting said door with said fence at the bottom thereof, a refuse can secured to the braced side of the door to swing therewith, said can projecting below the pivot ends of the door to lie in contact with the fence boards and form a stop for holding the door in the same plane as the fence when the door is shut said can comprising a body of rectangular cross section and having a beveled mouth, a lid hingedly'secured to the front top edge of the can to close over the beveled mouth, a handlesecured to the lid, a handle secured to the door at the opposite side of the can, said lid being arranged to open by gravity, as the door is swung out to dump EDWARD SANDSTROM.
