UNITED STATES EATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM G. VOGEL AND HARRY K. SNELL, OF ROCKFORD, ILLINOIS.
CAPSTAN-SCREW.
Application filed January 13, 1906.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM C. VoeEL and HARRY K. SNELL, citizens of the United States, both residing at Rockford, in the county of Vl' innebago and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in capstan-Screws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in capstan screws, designed to be employed in. connection with our lost motion piano action, for which patent was granted Feb. 13, 1906, Number 812,705. The object of these actions is to take up lost motion, to permit a rapid repeating action of the same rey, and to permit the key to remain in its normal position while the soft pedal is depressed thus giving the key at all times the same sweep or limit of travel.
The object of this invention is a capstan screw having an oblong head and which is designed to aid in effecting the results and improvements above described.
The invention consists of a capstan screw constructed as herein described, pointed out in the claim and shown in the accompanying drawings, in. which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation showing a portion of a piano key and action with our improved capstan screw applied thereto, the parts being in their normal position, the lever rail being in section. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing a portion of the parts when the key is depressed, the soft pedal of the piano Fig. 3 is a similar view illustrating the position of the parts when Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 295,945.
the key is at rest and the soft pedal is depressed. Fig. 4 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when both the soft pedal and key are depressed. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective view of our improved and preferred form of capstan screw.
In these drawings A represents a key, A a lever, A a movable lever rail, provided with a flange A to which is pivotally connected the lever A, and a pilot B is pivotally connected in any desired manner to the lever A.
Our capstan screw consists of a threaded shank C which carries an oblong head C, the head being provided midway its length with a suitable socket C to receive the threaded shank portion C.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the lever A is at all times in positive engagement with a portion of the capstan screw, which lever rocks on the screw head. That portion of the lever A which engages the capstan screw is provided with a suitable cushion D.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A capstan screw consisting of an oblong head, a centrally arranged socket carried by the under side of the head, and a threaded shank carried by said socket.
