GAS-PRODUCER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, LEWIS O. PARKER and FREDRIoK WV. BUSSMEYER, citizens of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gas-Producers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and. to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in gas producers and the ob ject in view is to produce an apparatus of this nature in which the grate bars will present a large area of combustion surface, the bars being separate and adapted to be interchanged.

The invention comprises various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.

We illustrate our invention in the accompanying drawings, in which:lVe have shown a sectional view of gas producer, showing features of our invention.

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a vertical tubular shell of the producer having a refractory lining B.

Mounted near the lower part of the tubular shell is a casting F having a central opening F and said casting has an annular groove F in which the upper angled ends G of the grate bars G are adapted to be held. Bars H are pivotally connected at their upper ends to said casting and at their lower ends to an annular ring I at I and a shoulder I upon said ring forms means for supporting the lower ends of the grate bars. The upper end of each bar H projects into a recess in the under surface of said casing. Said ring I has a second shoulder I upon which a sliding grate J is mounted, which latter is provided with a suitable handle J and guide extensions J 2 are provided upon which the grate is adapted to rest as it is reciprocated. A blower K is mounted upon the outer wall of the producer and a pipe K Specification of Letters Patent.

leads therefrom to the space below the grate. An ash trap L leads from the lower portion of the producer through which ashes are adapted to fall into the pit L. A pipe Q leads through the wall of the producer and opens at its lower end underneath the gas through which air is adapted to be introduced.

At suitable distances above the grate capped openings S are provided in the walls of the gas producer through which the fire may be observed and the material may be agitated by pokers.

What we claim to be new is 1. In combination with the wall of a gas producer, a casting fastened to said wall and provided with a central opening, the marginal edge of which is provided with an annular groove, a series of grate bars, the upper ends of which are angled and rest upon the projecting bottom wall of said groove, a ring, links pivotally connecting the same to said casting and upon which the lower ends of said grate bars rest, said ring having an annular shoulder upon the inner periphery thereof, and a grate resting upon said shoulder of the ring, as set forth.

2. In combination with the wall of a gas producer, a casting fastened to said wall and provided with a central opening, the marginal edge of which is provided with an annular groove, a series of grate bars, the upper ends of which are angled and rest upon the projecting bottom wall of said groove, a ring having shouldered portions upon the inner marginal edge thereof, the lower end of said grate bars resting upon one of said shoulders, links pivoted at their upper end in grooves formed upon the under surface of said casting, their lower ends pivoted to said ring above the lower ends of the grate bars, a grate mounted upon said ring and resting upon the lower of said shoulders, as set forth.
