PENCIL-CASE AND OTHER CYLINDER.
To all whom it "may concern: Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WALKER, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireiand, &c., residing at Mount Gambier, in the State of South Australia, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements (for educational purposes) in Pencil-Cases and other Cylinders; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
- This invention relates to a novelty in pencil boxes or other cylindrical hollow cases; and it consists in the combination therewith of certain devices for facilitating educational calculation problems, by answering or by yielding immediate answers to any of a series of predetermined questions. The information exhibited is thus interrelated, one part with other parts.
It is known that calculating apparatus has already been devised in which a perforated cylinder is movable to show a desired answer through one hole, but my object is to produce a simpler and better construction than any known to me.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of my device, partly broken away to show interior construction. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a slidable and rotatable,and (in some cases) removable sleeve; and Fig. 3 represents an end View showing (partly in transverse section) portion of the sleeve and contained parts, and showing a modification.
In these views A is a cylindrical outer sleeve. It has exactly three perforations and no more and it has these longitudinally set in one straight line. Each hole is made of any suitable size and shape for its purpose. If there were more holes it would lead to confusion and error on the part of children, and even other persons, using the device; hence the number of holes is three, and their position is an advantage for another purpose as it leaves almost the whole surface of the sleeve unperforated and smooth, and usable as a ruler. The sleeve has at will any suitable additions as a scale E, or a plurality of scales, and any desired printed matter. It, and all other parts, are of any suitable materials, and sizes, and in any suitable variety of color.

The words F actor and Product are omitted in some cases. In Fig. 2 the words At and Each appear. (or other money signs) near holes C and D, so that prices of goods, amounts of wages and so forth may be exhibited. Casing K has any suitable end caps, or cap. A removable cap shown has a body M, and a flange N, corresponding with flange O at the other end of the box, so that the device may roll on a plane without sleeve A touching it. Body M of the cap may screw on or otherwise, and be outside cylinder K or, as shown, inside. end ridge or transverse band L, integral with the cylinder; but a separate ring fitted on is in some cases used. Part L is useful as a boundary to the end J of the band or cylinder F. In some cases these rings are ridges or projections embossed on material F; or projecting ridges or members are integrally formed or affixed upon cylinder K. In some cases part F is in a plurality of separate (say three) sheets properly assembled but divided by these ridges. One advantage of having projections is that characters G, H, I, cannot become Worn or rubbed OR by movement of the sleeve.

2. A calculating device comprising .in
combination, an outer casing having a cylindrical interior wall and provided wlth 0 en-' ings spaced apart from each other and aving its endsentirely open, and a member disposed in said casing and relatively reduced with respect tothe diameter of the inner walls thereof and of greater length and projecting through the open ends of said casing, said inner member having peripherally disposed bearing elements engaging the inner wall of said casing to maintain said member and casing in concentric relation with respect to each other and permit relative rotation and longitudinal adjustment thereof, said element forming the sole bearing. means between said casing and member, said member. having a plurality of calculatin characters disposed upon its periphery to e disclosed through sa1d openings.
3. A calculating device comprising in combination, a hollow outer cylinder open at both endsand provided with spaced openin s in its wall, an inner cylinder disposed in sa1d outer cylinder and reduced in diameter with respect thereto, said inner cylinder being of greater length than the outer cylinder and projecting beyond the ends thereof, said inner cylinder having annular bearing members disposed on its periphery and en agin the interior of said outer c linder to hold said cylinders in concentric re ation with respect to each other and permit relative rotation and sliding adjustment thereof, said inner c linder being provided with calculatin c aracters arranged to be disclosed throng said openings, and caps on said inner cylinders limiting longitudinal movement thereof with respect to said outercylinder.
