To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN SPoLJAR, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Desks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to folding desks, and the object of the invention is to provide a desk with folding legs, and a folding pigeon hole compartment, together with means for locking said legs in a closed position, and means for locking the pigeon hole compartment in an open position.

I attain the above object by a structure that will be hereinafter described and then particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a desk constructed in accordance with my invention, Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the desk showing in dotted lines the legs or supports in a closed position, Fig. 4 is arear elevation of the desk folded, and Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.

In the accompanying drawings 1 and 2 designate two parallel boards connected by end boards 3, a front board 4, and a rear board 5, these boards forming a box like structure, with the top board 2 of a larger area than the bottom board 1, and serving functionally as the desk top. The boards 4 and 5 are of a greater depth than the end boards 3, to shield legs or supports 6 when folded upon the board 1. The legs or supports 6 are hinged to the board 1, as at 7, and are adapted to fold inwardly upon the board. To retain the legs in a vertical or open position, the upper hinged ends of the legs 6 are connected by braces 8, and the upper edges of these braces, intermediate the ends thereof, are provided with horizontal hooks 9 adapted to be engaged by pivoted latches 10, carried by the lower edges of the plates 3 intermediate the ends thereof.

To hold the legs or supports 6 in a folded position, the lower edge of the plate 5 is cut away, as at 11, and provided with pivoted clips 12, adapted to swing inwardly and engage the rear legs or supports, as best shown in dotted lines of Fig. 3.

The front board 4 is cut away, to provide a drawer opening 13 for a drawer 14 adapted to slide upon the bottom board 1.. The head 15 of the drawer 14 is provided with a hasp 16, adapted to engage in a keeper 17, carried by the front board 4, said hasp and keeper being employed to retain the drawer in a closed position, and these two elements are of a convenient form resembling the oriiinlary and well known trunk and valise Connected to the top plate 2 adjacent to the rear edge thereof by hinges 18, is a pigeon hole compartment 19, adapted to fold upon the plate 2, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5. To hold the pigeon hole compartment in a vertical position, the rear plate 5 is provided with a pivoted latch 20 adapted to engage a pin 21 carried by the rear side of the pigeon hole compartment 19, said latch and pin being arranged intermediate the ends of the plate 5 and the compartment 19.
