Description

I T. DB Q. RICHARDSON.
PACKAGE. 7 APPLwATioN FILED DEO.18, 1907v Patent d June 8,1909. I
314mm ko'z,
rlaollllflalllllllilillk Thomas DE Q. RICHARDSON, or PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
. PACKAGE.
Application filed December 18, 1907. Serial No. 407,012.
To allwhom- "it may concern: I
Be it known that I, THOMAS DE Q. RICH- .aunson, a citizen of the United States, residmg in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania. have invented a now and useful Package for Goods, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to novel means for putting-up goods, more particularly those of a brittle, friable, or sticky nature, whereby the goods are thoroughly protected from at-' mospheric intluence,-'may be packed, transported and handled without liability to chip-off or break, will not adhere to each other or the members of the package or rub on each other, or in other words, the goods, under ordinary circumstances, will be found to be intact and otherwise in fine marketable conditiomtheconstructionbf the device being hereinafter described, and the novel features pointed outin the claims.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a package embodying my invention. Fig. 2
represents a perspective view of the same, in partly complete condition. Fig. 3 represents a section thereof on line w-az of Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Figs. at and 5 repre sent'pcrspective views of portions of detached parts thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings 2 A designates a strip of pliable material such as paper of .wax or paratiln character, which is creased and folded in zig-zag order as plaits or pockets A, and -13 designates a strip of pliable material such as tissue paper, which is also folded in zig-zag order, forming similar plaits or pockets B.'
On the plaits A, are placed pieces C of candy, chewing gum. biscuits, etc., and on alternate plaitsB of the strip B are placed pieces or parts I) of batting or like material. forming cushions. which are retained in position by folds IQ composed of the sides of the strip B turned therefron'nso as to overlap the end portions of said pieces D.
It will be seen that the strip A with the applied pieces C. is placed upon the strip B with the applied pads D. the contacting plaits being in register. Then the combined plaits are folded together or closed and wrapped by the end portion A of the strip A, when it will be seen that the pieces 0 are enveloped in, and by the strip A, and

soprotected from atmospheric influence, and prevented from adhesion, one with the other and the members of the package, while the pieces (I a re removed from contact with each other. and so cannot adhere, nor rub on each other and mar the surface of said pieces, so said surfaces are preserved in their original condition. 'lhe resultant cushions form pliable and yielding, but sufiiciently firm backing. for the pieces C, so that'brcakage of the latter is prevented. It will be noticed, furthermore, thatthe strip B also incloses the strip A as an additional wrapper for the latter, and the pieces therein, and so said pieces are doubly protected from atmos: 'pheric influence. The package as formed is firmly inclosed by the end portion A of the strip A. which is wrapped around the s'ame as a hinder, the same preventing the package from improperly opening and separating. and so the goods are in admirable condition to be. transported and handled without liability, under ordinary circum- -stances, to chip or break, while they remain intact and in' good and salable condition, a feature of great. importance in goods of this class.
While I have specified certain means for carrying out my improvements, I do not wish to be limited exactly to the same, but desire to make such changes as may come within the scope of the'novelty involved.
Having thus'described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is v 1. In a package, a strip of plait-like foldable material creased and folded in zigzagv order forming pockets. and a strip of pliable material folded in zig-zag order forming similar pockets superimposed upon the first-named strip. the alternate pockets of the first-named strip being designed to retain articles therein. i
2. In a package, a plurality of plait-like strips of pliable material creased and folded in zig zag order forming pockets said strips being superimposed and folded one upon the other, and cushions, the latter being on alternate plaits of the one strip and retained in position by folds of said strip, the contacting plaits being in register and the folds of one .trip overlapping the end portions of said cushions.
3. In a package, a strip of plait-like foldable'material creased and folded in zig-zag order l'ornting poeltets, a strip of pliahle ma Ierial folded in zigzag order forming similar poeltets and superimposed upon thelirstnamed strip, and articles placed in the alternate poeltets ot the first-named strip.
t. ln a paekage. a strip of plait-like t'olds able material ereased and folded in zig-zag' order Forming 1)0('l t 'lS. a strip of pliahle n1a terial folded in jig-221g" order i'orn'ling similar poekets and superimposed upon the firstnamed strip, and articles placed in the alter nate pockets of the first-manual strip, one end of said first-named strip being extended and int-losing said pockets and art-ieles.
5. In a package, a plurality of plait-l'ike strips of pliable material creased and folded in zig--zag order forming" poelcets said strip being snperimposet'l and folded one upon the other. and articles and cushions, the latter being on alternate plaits of the one strip and retained in position by folds of said strip.
(3. In a paelt'age, a )ln'alit y of plait-like 9 strips of pliable material creased and folded f in zig-Zag order forming pockets said strips 1 being superimposed and folded one upon the other, and articles and cushions, the latter f being on alternate plaits of the one strip and 3 retained in position by folds of said strip, l
the eontaetiireplait's heingin register and the lolds ol one strip overlapping the end portions of said enshions.
