DOCUMENT-FILING ENVELOP.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, OLIVER G. LAW, citizen of the United States, residing at Dayton, in the county of Montgomery and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Filing Envelops; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descri tion of the invention, such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,- and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this sp ecification.

This invention relates to im rovements in document filing envelops, sue as are used for filing papers in robate, common pleas and other courts. (living to the great number of such filing envelops so used, it is the custom on account of the economy in space, to arrange such envelops u right, one in the rear of the other in assemb ages of from one to two dozen, and to com ress them together by a clamp in the rear. his renders it difficult to select an envelop from the assemblage .without releasing the clamp or removing a number of envelops in order to enable the title or number of the case inscribed thereon to be read in selecting the envelop to be removed. In order to remove'this difficulty and to enable a selection of any desired envelop without being putto the trouble of releasing the clamp or removing those envelops in front, is the primary object of the present invention. Thls is accom lished by extendingthe front of each enve op suitable distance above the top of the envelop proper'to provide necessary space for the notation of the number of the case or any other data indicating the papers filed in each particular envelop. Owing to the great amount 'of handling that these envelops are subjected to, it is important that they be so constructed as to not tear at the mouth of the envelop, the place most liable to give way. It is therefore another object of the invention to reinforce the sides of the envelop adjacent to the mouth to give such parts suitable tenacity and wearing quality.

Preceding a detail description of the invention, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, of which- Figure 1, is a view of an assemblage of filing envelops in perspective, after the manner of arranging them in probate court offioes and elsewhere. The assemblage of filing envelops shown in Fig. 1, are each identical in construction and are there shown one in the rear of the other as is customary in using them in probate courts and other places where their use is demanded. Each of such envelo s consists of a front A and a rear side B whic are united at their longitudinal and bottom edges by in- Wardly;breaking folds 0, otherwise termed accordion plaits. The front of such filing envelops is utilized for various engrossing data relating more or less to the contents of the papers or files contained therein. The accordion. plaits or side folds provide well-known means for enabling the envelop to enlarge or expand accbrding to .the bulk of the contents thereof.

-A novel feature of the present invention extended portion of each envelop to contain a suitable index to the contents thereof which may be seen Without necessitating the release of the damp which holds them compact, or the removal of the envelop in front of the one to be removed. In the present instance, No. is inscribed on this extended portion of each envelopl with a line extending therefrom upon whic the number of the case to which the papers contained in the envelop relate, may be placed, or any other data which may be an index to the contents of the envelop.

It will be seen from Fig. 1, that when a number of these envelops are placed one in the rear of the other, these extended portions D may be seen without it being necessary to remove the envelops in front of it or releasing the clamp. Another advantage of this extended portion D of the envelop is that it provides a convenient finger-hold b which the envelop may be conveniently wit drawn by the hand. The inside of the envelop at the mouth is reinforced by the application of strain of the envelop, said folds are extended up beyond the mouth of the envelo and are folded. over on the inside of the enve op as at G and are adhered to the inner sides of the folds at such points. This adds double strength to the envelops at these points which are called upon to withstand the greater portion of the due to the placing of the contents in the envelops and their removal therefroml The front and rear sides of the envelop are carried around the edges as at A and B and are there inclosed on the outer sides by the strips C, the upper ends of which; are carried over in the form of the reinforcing portions G, so that the parts A and B cooperate with the strips 0 on each side of the envelop and extended above the mouth thereof to rovidea space for an index to the contents 0 the envelop, and to 1provide a hand-hold for the withdrawal oft e envelop from its filing position, the-inwardl -break1ng folds-uniting the I front and rear si es, being "constructed by extending the-longitudinal edges of said front and rear sides inwardlyand reinforcing themv on their outer sides by longitudinal strips which are carried upwardly and turned over at their up er ends into the mouth of ,theen velop tially as shown and'described.
