NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES PETTIBONE, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
PACKING-CASE FOR TABLEWARE.-
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,287, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed March 26, 1900.
T0 ctZZ whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES PET' I'IBONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Packing-Cases for Tableware, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a packing-case for tableware.
It is very desirable to keep spoons, knives and forks, or tableware in a suitable case where they are not exposed to sulfureted hydrogen in the atmosphere, so that they will not tarnish when not in use. It is also very desirable to employ a packing-case for tableware in which the articles are kept from contact one with another, thereby preventing abrasive wear. It is also desirable to have such packing-case occupy a small compass and to be composed of. a soft material. These general objects are accomplished by the features herein set forth in this specification and drawings.
Figure 1 is a top plan View of my improved case in the open position. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of Fig. 1, showing the case open and a part of the covering-flaps broken ofi. Fig. 3 is a modification of the nesting-case proper.
A represents a nest of folding compartments. Each compartment of the series is a long casing, preferably open at each end. Each casing, as shown in the drawings, is secured to the adjacent casing by a row of stitches a.
In the preferred form of construction, as shown in Fig. 2, thereare two parallel series of casings b "b. Each of these series is composed of a separate piece of soft flexible-material, such as cloth, chamois, or felting. The free ends 0 d are attached to the folding cover B. The longitudinal series of scams or forms a pocket-case e. The folding covers B have marginal flapsf g g h. j represents a seam or binding around the marginal edge thereof.
2' k represent tape or strings which are long enough to go around the whole bundle and tie the marginal flaps down upon the casing.
t'm represent similar tapes applied to the end $erial No. 10,158. (No model.)
fold, so that the ends of the casing may be closed and the articles bound into the casing longitudinally.
In Figs. 1 and 2 the packing-case is shown with the pockets or sacks of a suitable size and form to receive knives and forks, which are individually inclosed each in their respective pocket or sack.
In themodiflcation shown in Fig. 3the casing proper is shown with the pockets or sacks of a suitable shape to receive spoons. The folding flaps are omitted. The casing is made of a single piece of material having two thicknesses between each compartment or pocket, as indicated at n o. 19 represents stitches securing these folding divisions together and making a very strong sack. It is obvious, of course, that the compartments may be made in either of the two forms shown; but that shown in Fig. 3 is the strongest and better adapted to heavy articles.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a packing-case, a flexible cover-flap, two or more flexible strips secured to the intermediate portion of said cover, and extending out at right angles therefrom, a series of transverse stitches through said strips dividing the same into a series of packing-cells, and means for uniting the ends of said coverflap over said packing-cells, substantially as specified.
. 2. In a packing-case, a flexible cover-flap, two or more flexible strips secured at their inner ends to said covering-flap and extending out at right angles therefrom, a series of transverse stitches passing through said flaps and dividing the same into a series of packing-cells, the said packing-compartment being collapsible toward said cover, and means for uniting the ends of said flap over said packing-compartment, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
JAMES PETTIBONE.
