BURIAL-VAULT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'May 11, 1909.
Application filed November 17, 1908. Serial No. 463,076.
and State'of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burial- Vaults, of which the following is a speci- 'fication.
My invention is an improvement in burial vaults and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings forming 2. art hereof, Figure 1 is a perspective view 0 the vault with the cover elevated, Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the vault, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the reinforcing frame.
The present embodiment of the invention comprises a boxl, and a cover 2, both formed of plastic material capable of hardening, and having embedded within the substance thereof, a reinforcing metallic frame to be presently described in detail.
The reinforcing frame of the box proper consists of a plurality of U-sha ed strips 3, connected at suitable intervals by longitudinal stri s 4, which stri s are continued across theen s of the box. he longitudinal stri s 36 are practically continuous, being formed 0 a e bar whose'ends are riveted together. The reinforcing frame of the cover consists of a plurality of U-shaped strips whose body portion is of angular shape, as shown at 6,
the arms being fiat, and connected by longitudinal stri s, 7, which may be continuous as described or the strips 4. The body ortions are also connected by'a longitu inal strip 8. To the end U-shaped strips 5, are
'40 connected the shanks 9 of rings 10, which rings are adapted to receive the straps for lowering the cover into the grave. The shanks are riveted to the angular portion of the strips as at 11, and near each end of the The box is provided on its outer face with a ledge or rib 12, which is continuous and'spaced apart a distance below the edge 13 of the box, and the upper face of the ledge is inclined inwardl and downwardl as at 14, to form a tro'ug which encircles t e box.
the lower edge of the flange is inclined upwardly and inwardly as shown at 16, in such manner that when the cover is laced in position on the box, a space is ormed between the free edge of the flange and the upper face of the ledge-extending entirely around the vault and triangular in cross section. The flange is of a depth such that when the cover rests upon the free edge of the box, the said flange will reach the upper face of the rib, but will not press thereagainst, the edge of the flange and the upper face of the rib abutting.
When in use, after the box is placed within the vault, plastic material is placed upon the ledge, and the cover is lowered into place. The weight of the cover forces the free edge of the flange into the plastic material, which is forced into all the crevices, thus effectually sealing the vault.
It will be observed that the weight of the cover is supported by the free edge of the box and not by the fresh lastic material resting upon the ledge, an that the fresh plastic material is prevented from displace ment by the over han ing outer edges of the flange, and of the rib.
I claim:
1. A vault of the class described, comprising a. box having an external ledge or rib parallel-with the free edge thereof, and spaced apart therefrom, the upper .face of t e ledge or rib being inclined inwardly and downwardly to form a trough, and a cover provided with a flange fitting outside of the walls of the box, said flange being of lesser depth than the distance from the edge of the box to the ledge or rib and inclined inwardly and upwardly whereby when the cover is in lace an annular recess closed on its outer side will be formed between the edge of the box and the edge of the flange.
2. A vault of the class described oomprisin a receptacle, and a cover of lastic material, said cover having a rein orcing frame com osed of U-shaped strips whose arms are at, and whose body portion is of angle material, and rings provided with shanks riveted to the angular part of the bod portion near the ends thereof, and extem ing through the plastic material, and
longitudinal strips connecting the arms of shanks riveted to the angular art of' the the U-shaped strips. body ortion near.the ends t ereof, and 4 3. A vault of .iihe class described, lcom- I exten ing through the plastic material. prisin v a rece tac e, and a cover of astic 1 5 material, said cover having a reini drcing EDWARD MI-LLHOUSE' frame composed of U-shaped strips Whose Witnesses: arms are flat, and whose body portion is of J. H.-SM1TH, angle material, and rings provided with MAU'DE MILLER.
